If eliminating meat from your daily diet seems intimidating—if not downright impossible—you’re not alone. In fact, just 8 percent of the world’s population is vegetarian or vegan. For the other 92 percent of omnivores out there, going meatless one day a week can be more practical. That’s why the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future launched the first official Meatless Monday campaign in 2003. By choosing the first weekday to go meatless, they hope to encourage more Americans to consume less meat. Not sure if you’re ready to take the leap? The environmental, financial, and health benefits of not...

A tweet advocating consumers cut back on red meat consumption has been deleted by the Environmental Protection Agency following objections from the Irish Farmers Association. The tweet posted yesterday by the EPA’s X account, formerly Twitter, urged consumers to “try veggie recipes” and “reduce your red meat consumption slowly: veggie lunches, Meat Free Mondays etc”. The tweet also pointed out that 10% of meat bought is thrown out. Following a complaint from the IFA, the EPA responded to the farming organization, saying it was their intention to share helpful advice, not to cause anger; but they acknowledge it may have...

MADISON, Wis. -- Brat Fest is getting a lot of attention this weekend, but on Saturday a smaller festival showcased all that can be done without meat or dairy products. Vilas Park played host for Vegan Sausage Fest, where vendors made delicious and creative vegan-friendly dishes. Attendees could sample plant-based foods in a traditional festival setting with plenty of options to choose from. Organizers said about 1,000 people attended, with social media used to promote the event. "The last two months we've been putting a lot of social media content out there, and really promoting it," organizer Beth Skogen said....

Stouffer's meatless lasagna and Digiorno's Rising Crust Meatless Supreme will be made with Sweet Earth, a plant-based ground beef alternative. According to a consumer survey commissioned by Nestlé USA, nearly half have either integrated plant-based meat into their diet or would consider doing so long-term and 3 in 10 who have not yet tried plant-based meat responded that would do so if they had the opportunity. The new products will be available in stores in the spring of 2020.

Is the hype of the plant-based burger craze and laboratory-grown beef already outstripping the reality? I’ve seen varying taste test reports on the Impossible Whopper and similar offerings, ranging from the ecstatic to the disgusted, but even the real fans aren’t saying that it’s better than a finely grilled burger. At most, they say it’s hard to tell the difference. But now we’re hearing from some of the scientists looking into these experimental monstrosities and they’re claiming that in the very near future, plant-based or lab-cultured “meat” is going to taste better than actual beef. What does that even...

More than four months after Missouri became the first U.S. state to regulate the term “meat” on product labels, Nebraska’s powerful farm groups are pushing for similar protection from veggie burgers, tofu dogs and other items that look and taste like real meat. Nebraska lawmakers will consider a bill this year defining meat as “any edible portion of any livestock or poultry, carcass, or part thereof” and excluding “lab-grown or insect or plant-based food products.” It would make it a crime to advertise or sell something “as meat that is not derived from poultry or livestock.” Similar measures aimed at...

The resolution to implement Meatless Mondays was unanimously passed by the St. Mary’s College SGA in early December after months of inter-campus debate. According to the resolution, the concept of Meatless Mondays upholds the college’s mission to be environmentally sustainable by decreasing its dependence on factory farming. The eight-week long trial program will cease the serving of meat, with the exception of deli meats, in the Great Room (the college’s main dining hall) on Mondays. Meat options will continue to be available at other campus eateries, including the Grab-n-Go and the Upper Deck.

A resolution adopted on Oct. 24 reads: "Be it resolved, that the Council of the City of Los Angeles hereby declares all Mondays as 'Meatless Mondays' in support of comprehensive sustainability efforts as well as to further encourage residents to eat a more varied plant-based diet to protect their health and protect animals." Councilwoman Jan Perry, who introduced the resolution, also wants to ban new fast-food restaurants in South Los Angeles. "While this is a symbolic gesture, it is asking people to...

Today is the last Friday of Advent. Advent in itself is a time of prayer, abstinence, and alms-giving. Do most people remember Advent as a holy season? Since Fridays have always been a day of mortification and prayer, it would be special to honour our Lord. Take the time to say a prayer, give to the needy, visit a shut-in, abstain from your favourite treat, or simply skip a meal. Its that simple and it is for a worthy cause.

MEATLESS FRIDAYSand theOfficial Church Law The National Conference of Catholic (American) Bishops - NCCB Studies Returning Meatless Fridays The vast majority of Catholics today do not know that there is an existing obligation to abstain from meat on all Fridays of the year. While it is true that the Code of Canon Law allows for the substituting of another penitential practice, authorized by the NCCB, one has not been defined. As a consequence the abiding custom of the Church has been set aside. Neither bishops nor priests, with rare exception, inform the faithful of their obligations....
