HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Tropical Storm Douglas has strengthened to a category 1 hurricane Wednesday, according to the Pacific Hurricane Center. This is the first hurricane of the 2020 eastern Pacific season, with wind speeds up to 75 mph. Douglas has resumed strengthening, after remaining steady for almost 24 hours. The system has developed a ragged eye during the past couple of hours. The system is expected to reach the islands beginning with Hawaii Island on late Sunday into early Monday.

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced that he signed an emergency order which involves Oahu residents to stay at home and work from home. Two Oahu residents were cited by DLNR conservation officers after they were allegedly caught picking hundreds of opihi from rocks in a marine life conservation area. The DLNR said 53-year-old Raymond Agsalda of Waialua and 53-year-old Ronsin Rosa of Haleiwa were caught Tuesday. In their possession were 784 opihi which were allegedly taken from the Pupukea Marine Life Conservation District on Oahu’s North Shore. Hawaii law prohibits taking any kind of sea life from the area, with the exception of in-season fishing at Waimea Bay. Even then, the DLNR says species restrictions and bag limits are in place. A small, twin-engine plane used for skydiving crashed in the Hawaiian island of Oahu on Friday, killing all nine people aboard, authorities said. Names of the victims weren't immediately released. The King Air plane burst into flames upon hitting the ground near the Dillingham Airfield around 6:30 p.m. local time. The airfield will remain closed until further notice, officials said. There were six employees and three customers on the flight, said Tim Sakahara of Hawaii's Department of Transportation, citing preliminary information. Witnesses said the plane appeared to have problems during takeoff, noticing that it was unsteady on the runway.

A same-sex couple has filed a lawsuit, accusing a Honolulu police officer of discrimination, assault and battery, and violation of their Fourth Amendment rights. The Department of Emergency Management advises residents to follow the progress of Tropical Storm Flossie as it approaches Hawaii. Airmen draped two F-22 planes with giant maile lei after the jets landed at Hickam Field during a dedication ceremony Friday.
