Despite persistent and worsening polling on the Biden administration’s handling of immigration, two Senate Republicans on the Judiciary Committee are trying to make an amnesty deal. In a July 6 letter to Chairman Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Sens. John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) requested that the committee schedule an executive business meeting for a bill to “offer permanent legal status to only currently enrolled and activate participants in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program”. -snip- Curiously, Cornyn and Tillis are advocating for a DACA amnesty despite calling the DACA policy unlawful.
  • Jeb Bush: Don’t use border crisis to defer immigration reform (Amnesty pimp emerges from hidey-hole)

Former Florida governor Jeb Bush is urging Congress not to use the current crisis on the southwestern border as an "excuse" for not passing comprehensive immigration reform. Bush and Clint Bolick, co-authors of a 2013 book on immigration, write in a Wall Street Journal op-ed published Wednesday evening that surge of Central American children crossing the border illegally should not be a reason for House Republicans to refuse to pass immigration reform.
  • Immigration reform’s only principle: Job One is protecting the interests of Americans

Rep. John A. Boehner and other House Republican leaders are huddling behind closed doors to draft a set of “principles” for immigration reform that they intend to unveil at their upcoming retreat on Jan. 29. Let me save them some time. There is one — and only one — principle for true immigration reform: Like any other public policy, it should serve the greatest interests of the greatest number of Americans. Clearly, very few if any public policies conform to that principle — hence, Congress‘ 8 percent job-approval rating — but few fail the test as thoroughly as our current...
  • Democrats must decide how far to bend on immigration

Congressional Democrats and advocates for immigration reform will have to decide how much to bend as they await proposals from House Republicans that are likely to fall far short of what they have demanded. House GOP leaders plan to release as soon as next week their principles for rewriting the nation’s immigration laws, a document that could be followed by a series of legislative proposals. The principles are expected to be broad-brush in nature and emphasize border and interior security measures, but they are likely to include a first-ever official House GOP endorsement of legal status for many of the...
  • Pitfalls of Immigration Reform (GOP Amnesty Summit starts 1/29 at luxury MD resort!)

The GOP must steer clear of guest-worker programs and legalization without citizenship. Two of the basic rules of democratic politics are: Don’t hurt your allies, and don’t give your electoral opponents a weapon to use against you. As House Republican leaders prepare to announce their immigration principles near the end of this month, they should be aware of both rules. Two policies they are considering endorsing — legalization without citizenship and a massive increase in guest-worker visas — could sabotage the GOP’s standing with its base while also closing off future electoral roads. Legalization without citizenship would split the base...
  • Bucking A Trend, Select House GOP Group Eyes Bill Giving Legal Status To Undocumented Immigrants

The only remaining Republican in what had begun as a bipartisan House group working on immigration says that he is crafting legislation that would provide a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants, a move likely not to sit well with some of his GOP colleagues. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, of Florida, said he and several other Republicans are working on a measure that offers some of the nation’s estimated 11 undocumented immigrants a way to “get right with the law,” according to the Wall Street Journal. -snip- Rep. Darrell Issa, a California Republican, is working on his own bill to...

  • Shamnesty John McCain is back in full force: No, he never “got the message”

First, my friends, a reminder of what was printed right here on January 23, 2008: After spearheading a disastrous, security-undermining illegal alien amnesty bill last year with Teddy Kennedy, “straight-talking” GOP Sen. John McCain claims he has seen the light. In TV appearances, he vows to put immigration enforcement first. On the campaign trail, he offers a perfunctory promise to strengthen border security and emphasizes the need to restore Americans’ trust in their government’s ability to defend the homeland. “I got the message,” he told voters in South Carolina. “We will secure the borders first.” But how can McCain cure...
