The sister of former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was killed in a car accident Saturday in Arizona. Pima County sheriff’s spokesman Ryan Inglett said Ann Day, 77, suffered fatal injuries after her vehicle was struck by two other cars near Tucson. Day was a former Arizona Republican state senator and Pima County supervisor. Day was driving eastbound on Ina Road around 7:40 a.m. when an oncoming car crossed the median. From Arizona: The Pima County Board of Supervisors will vote later this month on a measure to ban smokers from being hired by their local government. Those smokers who already work for the government will face a 30 percent health-insurance surcharge. Pima County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry says the county will save lots of money if employees who smoke can be “replaced” over time with healthier workers. The Pima County Board of Supervisors will vote this month on whether to refuse to hire smokers and put a major pinch on the pocketbooks of those who already work there. The two-part policy would take effect in July 2015. A pilot project at 25 Pima County polling places will have workers asking voters to scan their driver’s licenses with an iPad. The goal is to replace the signature roster books currently used at the polling places, Pima County Elections Director Brad Nelson said. Poll workers will use the iPads to scan voters’ driver’s licenses and verify their identification. Voters will then sign their names on the iPad screens with their finger. SIERRA VISTA — In the wake of his son, Sierra Vista Police Officer Justin Dannels, shooting and killing a man after an attempted traffic stop in Sierra Vista last month, Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels said he has been the target of threats originating from Mexico. “The threats were made toward law enforcement in general, to include specific threats against myself, my chief deputy and, of course, Justin,” Dannels said Tuesday. Authorities arrested the suspects late Thursday after finding 25 bales of marijuana, weighing more than 430 pounds, inside a shed at an Ajo home. Ajo is about 100 miles west of Tucson. The discovery came after a deputy made a traffic stop in front of the home. The deputy smelled marijuana in the car, reportedly driven by Womack, and called for additional deputies and a drug-sniffing dog. NOGALES, AZ (AP) - Arizona officials say the state is suing the U.S. International Boundary and Water Commission for state permit and Clean Water Act violations caused by allowing untreated industrial wastewater to cross the U.S. border from Mexico at Nogales. TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) - Unsealed court records allege that two former Pima County Sheriffs deputies worked together to pull over known drug traffickers to steal their money. In the "superseding indictment" that was unsealed Thursday, prosecutors allege that then-Deputies Miguel Arvizu and Francisco Jimenez arranged to also provide "security" while others stole drugs and money from a storage facility in Green Valley.
