SIERRA VISTA In the wake of his son, Sierra Vista Police Officer Justin Dannels, shooting and killing a man after an attempted traffic stop in Sierra Vista last month, Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels said he has been the target of threats originating from Mexico.
The threats were made toward law enforcement in general, to include specific threats against myself, my chief deputy and, of course, Justin, Dannels said Tuesday.
On April 14, Justin Dannels shot and killed Lauro Jesus Avechuco, of Sierra Vista, after Avechuco attempted to strike Dannels with his car, according to Sierra Vista police.
Moments prior to the shooting, Avechuco was driving a vehicle that had failed to stop after being pulled over in the Golden Acres community.
A passenger in the car, Marco Antonio Moreno Guerro, 42, of Mexico, fled from the car on foot just before the shooting. He was later apprehended on May 6 and turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol.
According to a statement from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the passenger in the vehicle, Guerro, has been removed from the U.S. nine times, with his most recent removal occurring on Oct. 21, 2013. His criminal history includes felony convictions for possession of drug paraphernalia and attempted aggravated driving, as well as three illegal entry convictions, including his May 5, 2014 conviction in federal court in Tucson.
Dannels would not provide specifics on the nature of the threats he has received, nor any action taken by the sheriffs office in response, saying only, Threats, especially toward law enforcement, we take a very proactive approach toward, and thats what weve done.
Local law enforcement agencies have been briefed on the situation.
Anytime law enforcement is threatened, through intel, through network-sharing between law enforcement, we actually issue an alert. Weve notified all law enforcement as a precautionary measure, Dannels said.
When asked if federal authorities are involved, the sheriff said, One thing Ive promoted very high is that law enforcement work as a unified group, so all law enforcement have been notified, and we are working together on this.
The Sierra Vista Police Department have received the sheriffs offices completed investigation of the shooting incident, as well as a report on the investigation by the FBI, said Adam Thrasher, the departments deputy chief. The police departments own investigation is expected to be completed within days.
Were putting the finishing touches on ours, and hope to deliver it all to the Pima County Attorneys Office later this week, Thrasher said.
The Cochise County Attorneys Office will not be reviewing the case, since it has a conflict of interest, as it is the legal advisor to the sheriff. Therefore, Kellie Johnson, chief criminal deputy for the Pima County Attorneys Office, will review the investigations to determine if Officer Dannels was justified in shooting Avechuco.
The officer remains on paid administrative leave pending the results of the review.
It won’t be long before a hot war status with Mexico.
Decades ago I knew this would start happening as U.S. LE was restrained from enforcement on the border.
The Mexican Caudillos who run the mafias interpret this as weakness. And in their world, that means you die.
Prior to about 1980, if this had happened, a full scale war on the traffickers would have been mounted and they would have instantly retreated.
Now they know they can paralyze U.S. efforts by playing games with ICE, the administration, the courts, the Mexican agitationist groups, etc etc etc, all the people who are trying to subvert and undermine the U.S.
And of course, all they gotta do is scream “Racism!” and everyone freezes.
So this puts the lives of U.S. officials in play, and it means the Narcos are effectively in control.
Thanks to all the aforementioned groups, and especially to 5th column back stabbers like John McCain, who makes it all possible by opposing any efforts to stop it.
Not sure if your graphic displayed.
Sounds like the passenger shoulda been transferred to Tombstone.
Boot hill???
He could’a been nailed at the daily shootout.
Neck Streatched at the County Court House Gallows,.....
Walks like a duck, talks like a duck; must be duck season.
Mexico would win easily because the US Rules of Engagement would be to run away when confronted by people with guns.
