RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — A credit card that "must have fallen out of her bag" turned a woman into a crime victim. That card was used at a food and liquor store on President Barack Obama Highway in Riviera Beach, and some other places. Police went there on the evening of Saturday, Sept. 24, and met up with a mother and daughter. The two have a joint account together which was attached to the daughter’s debit card. The daughter said she keeps it in her purse, and she last saw it the day before. Still, charges were being made....

Today in “The Adventures of Florida Man,” one intelectually-challenged individual thought he had pulled off a major heist but then squandered it all away for a lack of due diligence and patience. The criminal stole rare coins and then cashed them in for a fraction of their actual worth. Peak Florida man right here. Shane Anthony Mele of Riviera Beach, Florida, met Michael Johnson a few years ago through mutual friends. The 40-year-old Mele was down on his luck after his wallet was allegedly stolen and didn’t have a place to stay. Back in October, Johnson agreed to let Mele...

The Riviera Beach City Council authorized the city’s insurer to pay nearly $600,000 worth of ransom to regain access to data walled off through an attack on the city’s computer systems. In a meeting Monday night announced only days before, the board voted 5-0 to authorize the city insurer to pay 65 bitcoins, a hard-to-track cryptocurrency valued at approximately $592,000. An additional $25,000 would come out of the city budget, to cover its policy deductible. Without discussion on the merits, the board tackled the agenda item in two minutes, voted and moved on. The dollar amount was not mentioned before...

An African-American police officer from Florida has laid bare his heart in a powerful way. Pundits have been talking non-stop since a new wave of sensationalized stories about so-called trigger happy cops hit the news last week. Brutal reality hits officer Jay Stalien in the face every single day and he poured out his heart on Facebook in a riveting post. According to his profile, Stalien works in Riviera Beach, a city that despite its exotic-sounding name, is known for its significant rate of black on black crime. The post contains piercing words from Stalien and should be read in...

Old Dixie Highway is now officially President Barack Obama Highway within the city limits of Riviera Beach. For the residents of Riviera Beach, it has been a long time coming. Mary Brabham has been a resident of Riviera Beach for years. She says the change is welcome. "It's time to let the past be the past. We are moving forward and do things not for one, but for all." According to Riviera Beach Mayor Thomas Masters, Old Dixie Highway served as a reminder that this city was once heavily segregated.

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. - A dividing highway in Riviera Beach is becoming historic again. A proposal to rename Old Dixie Highway to Barack Obama Highway ultimately passed in Riviera Beach, but not without hitting some speed bumps. "I got a little worried for a minute, because we didn't seem at first to have the majority," said Mayor Thomas Masters, City of Riviera Beach. There was plenty of approval from the crowd to remove Old Dixie Highway from 1st Street to Silver Beach Road. "You have the chance to right the wrong and make a new chapter," said one woman who...

Although the American people are overwhelming outraged by the recent eminent domain decision of the Supreme Court (Kelo vs. New London), and while many government entities have passed legislation and regulations to minimize its impact, the rapacious takeovers by private developers in New London and Riviera Beach are proceeding at full speed. It appears that nothing can be done to save the citizens of these communities from the legal theft of their property, and probably only a revisiting of this decision by the Supreme Court can save the rest of us from this trashing of a basic American right to...

The taking of people’s property by eminent domain in order to sell it to private developers is getting totally out of hand, and crying for justice. After the infamous Kelo vs. New London case was decided in favor of developers by the liberal majority on the Supreme Court, there was a spate of stories about how the US Congress and various states were enacting laws to counter this abysmal (and plainly unconstitutional) decision. It is becoming clear, however, that people’s rights (especially poor people) are being trampled on all over the country, and the only way to right this wrong...
