When Denmark became the first European country last month to revoke residence status for more than 200 Syrian refugees, it faced condemnation from EU lawmakers, the UN refugee agency and human rights groups. Authorities in Copenhagen argue that parts of Syria are now safe enough for refugees to return. But the issue has proved divisive and activists and community groups have planned protests in several cities on Wednesday in support of the refugees. For a country with a liberal reputation, Denmark has become known for repeatedly tightening its immigration policies in recent years. In a separate move, it recently signed...

Former Neo-Nazi recruiter Frank Meeink says that Fox News has radicalized millions of Americans towards right-wing extremism, comparing the rhetoric on the cable news network to the language and propaganda that aired during the Rwandan civil war and genocide in the 1990s. “Fox News has completely radicalized so many Americans,” Meeink told CNN’s Pamela Brown on Saturday. “If you look at Fox News and then you compare that to hate radio from Rwanda, and what started that civil war, there’s comparisons there. We have to know that a lot of our fellow Americans, our fellow children of God, have been...

An unusual set of properties make it an intriguing subject for scientists, as well as a potential source of both peril and prosperity for the millions of people living nearby. Kivu doesn’t behave like most deep lakes. Typically, when water at the surface of a lake is cooled – by winter air temperatures or rivers carrying spring snowmelt, for example – that cold,...

Headlines in Western media saying an African country has closed 8,000 churches are always going to make Christians sit up and take notice. There are so many stories of the church under pressure, and many of them are true – Christians are the most persecuted religious group in the world. In Rwanda, though, where this story comes from, it's not quite that simple. It's true that the government has closed 8,000 churches – but why, and what do the Christians who live there think about it? Forever shadowed by the 1994 genocide in which around 800,000 Tutsis were murdered by...
