  • Jews overwhelmingly support abortion rights. Overturning Roe violates my religious freedom

The Supreme Court’s decision Friday to overturn Roe v. Wade and severely limit abortion access across much of the country is not only an infringement on my human rights. It also violates my religious beliefs. Given that American Jews are one of the most consistently liberal groups in the country, it’s not surprising that an overwhelming majority of us — 83% in one 2014 poll — support legal abortion in all cases.
  • What the ‘Constitutional Republic’ of Oroville says about the state of American democracy

Democracy isn’t as popular as it used to be. Take the Oroville City Council’s overwrought recent declaration that it’s a “Constitutional Republic City,” which is steeped in creeping disregard for a once-presumptive American ideal. The measure declares that the council’s members and constituents need not follow the laws of the duly and democratically elected state and federal governments in which they’re located — and upon which they’re deeply dependent — because, well, they don’t want to.

Democracy isn’t as popular as it used to be. Take the Oroville City Council’s overwrought recent declaration that it’s a “Constitutional Republic City,” which is steeped in creeping disregard for a once-presumptive American ideal. “NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED by the Oroville City Council that the City of Oroville is declared to be a Constitutional Republic City,” thunders the resolution, and “that any executive orders issued by the State of California or by the United States federal government that are overreaching or clearly violate our constitutionally protected rights will not be enforced by the City of Oroville against its...

California Gov. Gavin Newsom will travel to Glasgow, Scotland, next month for the United Nations climate conference, his first major conference abroad since becoming governor in 2019. Newsom will attend the conference alongside his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and several members of his administration, including Environmental Protection Secretary Jared Blumenfeld and Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot. More than a dozen Democrats in the Legislature also plan to attend, according to Newsom’s office. Newsom’s announcement that he will attend the conference comes on the heels of his administration releasing a draft rule that would ban new oil drilling within 3,200 feet...

California is banning state-funded travel to Ohio over the state’s new law allowing doctors to decline medical services to people on moral or religious grounds. The Ohio measure triggered a 2016 California law that requires the attorney general to prohibit state-funded travel to states that discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, according to a Friday press release from California Attorney General Rob Bonta.

VIDEOLarry Elder, who could be California's next governor if the recall election next month against Gavin Newsom is successful, was interviewed by the Sacramento Bee editorial board. One of the editors asked Elder a gotcha question about "The Big Lie." Elder took that question and completely turned the tables on it to the extent that it stunned the editor. The editor's reaction at the end will make you LOL!

  • A plea to members of Placer County churches during COVID surge: Stay home for Christmas

    Sacramento Bee ^ | Dec 25 2020 | HANNAH HOLZER, Sacramento Bee
It would be easy to shame Destiny Christian Church, its members and its pastor, Greg Fairrington, for selfishly ignoring multiple state-imposed orders to cease indoor gatherings — an especially reckless act given Placer County’s restricted intensive care unit capacity which recently dipped to zero. But in a spirit of compassion that seems more apt this holiday season, here’s my message to Destiny: I am appealing to your Christian values of moral responsibility and love for your neighbors and urging you to remain in the safety of your homes this Christmas. Because this is the only way to mitigate the spread...
  • Kamala Harris faces sexism and racism as online commenters label her ‘Black Hillary’

Despite all the fury on social media about the fly on Mike Pence’s head and Kamala Harris’ demeanor, analysts say the vice presidential debate is unlikely to alter the state of the presidential race. Yet the attacks on Harris afterward were particularly harsh. The comments during and after Wednesday’s debate were full of complaints that the Democratic vice presidential candidate was too snarky, catty, and had an annoying voice. Many took issue with her facial expressions. “Take it like a woman. Don’t make faces,” tweeted former Fox News host Megyn Kelly. “Mike Pence was a gentleman, forthright and focused. He...

The Sacramento Bee will leave its 2100 Q Street headquarters next summer, a move that is intended to help offset a decline in ad revenue, according to the newspaper’s regional editor. The announcement was made on the Sacramento Bee’s website in a story surrounded by more than a dozen digital advertisements, some of which obscured the text of the article when they weren’t distractedly animated. The move comes as many non-essential Sacramento Bee staff had been asked to work from home due to the ongoing coronavirus health pandemic.

A consulting firm run by a top Biden campaign official is receiving $35 million from California for a voter outreach program linked to the state's coronavirus response. The state awarded Democratic public relations giant SKDKnickerbocker the lucrative deal as part of the state's "Vote Safe California" program on Aug. 13. The program aims to "educate the public on the safety, security, and ease of voting in the November General Election amid the COVID-19 pandemic" and was launched following Democratic governor Gavin Newsom's May decision to send every registered voter in the state a mail-in ballot. The $35 million comes in...
  • Tesla’s Elon Musk says he’ll leave California due to coronavirus shutdown. Who cares? (Sacramento Bee editorial)

Poor Elon Musk. COVID-19 has killed nearly 2,700 Californians so far, but he’s the one who’s truly suffering during the coronavirus pandemic. The Tesla founder and billionaire CEO launched a fresh Twitter tantrum on Saturday. He threatened to move his electric car company out of California as a protest against the state’s coronavirus stay-at-home order. “Frankly, this is the final straw,” wrote Musk on Twitter after health officials in Alameda County declined to let Tesla’s factory re-open this week. “Tesla will now move its HQ and future programs to Texas/Nevada immediately.” Musk also insulted Alameda County’s health officer, calling her...

The Iraqi-American contractor who was killed in a rocket attack in Iraq in late December was buried in Sacramento on Saturday. His death was the start of a chain of events that U.S. leaders say prompted them to carry out drone strikes in Iraq and Syria, which culminated with the killing of Iranian military leader Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

There is one reason and one reason only why Kamala Harris made a big splash when she declared her candidacy for president in January and then shrunk in a crowded field since then: Harris is not who she presents herself to be. And that realization tends to dawn on people after she exhausts her talking points and must demonstrate more than being telegenic and effusive. Harris looks dazzling at first sight. She has a great personal story. She’s been wildly successful in her career at every step of the way. But Harris’ story of who she really is eventually douses...

California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s first budget won’t look exactly like he wanted, but a deal lawmakers released late Sunday largely fulfills the objectives he set six months ago when he first outlined his spending plan. Lawmakers want to use an “extraordinary” state budget surplus to expand health care options for undocumented people while stockpiling billions of dollars in reserves in anticipation of an economic downturn, according to documents the Legislature’s Budget Conference Committee released.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents entered Sacramento Superior Court last week and handcuffed an immigrant, making an arrest inside a courtroom that is considered a first of its type in the state, one that could have a chilling effect across California. “This will turn the judicial system on its head,” Sacramento attorney Charles Pacheco said. Pacheco said Wednesday’s arrest happened as a Sacramento Superior Court arraignment for his client, Yovanny Ontiveros-Cebreros, was concluding. Pacheco said ICE agents placed his client in handcuffs. Pacheco said he asked Superior Court Judge Lawrence Brown to step in, and Brown placed Ontiveros-Cebreros in the...
