‘Getz/Gilberto’ is now a jazz classic, but when it was recorded no one expected it to become one of the best selling jazz albums of all time.As the five musicians, one of whom was accompanied by his wife, arrived at A&R Studios in New York City on Monday evening March 18, 1963, none would have guessed that they were about to give jazz an almost unprecedented shot in the arm with Getz/Gilberto. Jazz was still, at this point, closer to the mainstream of popular taste, but it was still a minority interest. Stan Getz and João Gilberto were, however, about...

Thousands of dancers from Rio de Janeiro's elite samba schools rolled out their traditional parades of feathers and sequins as the main business of the giant annual Carnival got under way last night. In total, 14 samba schools from the elite so-called 'special group' will be taking part in the parades last night and on Monday evening at the packed purpose-built stadium known as the Sambadrome, to compete for the prestigious Carnival title. Each school, featuring up to 4,000 shimmering dancers, elaborate giant floats and deafening percussion, will take 75 minutes to parade down the 700 yards long Sambadrome track....

IMPORTANT -- This thread is a followup to http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3278876/posts - New Redirect to SMB Flaw in all Windows versions including Windows 10. It contains a list of the specific software packages affected, and there are a LOT of them. What would you say if we told you that your version of Windows is affected by a vulnerability that dates back to 1997? You’d laugh, right? Surely, after all, Microsoft would have patched the fault prior to releasing Windows 98, or at the latest, Windows 2000? Well, not quite. This Redirect to SMB vulnerability has its roots in the identically-named attack...

Pope Francis's spirited participation in the 37th Annual Convocation of the Charismatic movements along with some 50,000 Catholics at Rome's Olympic Stadium leaves no doubt that he is the first ever Charismatic pope... Like their Pentecostal brethren who inspired the movement, Catholic Charismatics practice a form of Christianity centered on the transformative role of the Holy Spirit in their lives.... While the Catholic Charismatic Renewal enjoyed papal endorsements from both of Francis's predecessors, the Argentine pope became the first to attend an annual Charismatic convocation. Verbally, the dynamic pope called the Charismatic Renewal "a great force" for the Catholic Church,...

Tire, Lebanon (Reuters) – A protest by Muslim clerics torpedoed a Brazilian samba show in the Lebanese city of Tire on Thursday, local officials said. A statement by the clerics condemned plans for the open-air display by a dance troupe that has been touring Lebanon. "We support tourism but are against obscenity," said Sheikh Ali Yassin, who heads a group of clerics in the predominantly Shi'ite Muslim city. The local council responded by cancelling the show after consulting politicians and security officials, officials said.

My boss has asked me to find the version of Linux/Unix that Samba is developed and tested on, in that we might find the most reliable Samba platform. I'm guessing it's developed on Fedora, and tested on RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux), which would mean www.centos.org would qualify, but I'd like to hear what knowledgeable FRiends ... know. Thank you.

SAO PAULO, Brazil - A packed school bus plunged into the ocean after crashing into a car on a seaside road in southern Brazil Friday, injuring all 26 children aboard, authorities said. Three of the children were hospitalized in serious condition after the morning accident near Florianopolis, some 435 miles south of Sao Paulo, the Brazilian federal highway police said. The children, aged between 8 and 14, were on their way to school when the accident happened, police said. The cause of the crash was under investigation, but authorities said it appeared the bus driver lost control after being cut...

Andrew Tridgell, creator of the Samba server software used by free and open-source software developers alike, made an important contribution to the European Commission’s defence of its 2004 Microsoft antitrust ruling at the Court of First Instance last week. Tridgell’s testimony was compelling not only because it seemed to so effectively refute Microsoft’s arguments, but also because of the way he characterised the world of software development and Microsoft’s role in it. Judge John Cooke, by far the most technology literate of the 13 judges hearing Microsoft's appeal of the antitrust ruling, asked Tridgell if he ever tests his server...

BRUSSELS, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Microsoft said on Wednesday it sued the European Commission in an EU court to gain quick resolution of a question surrounding sanctions imposed by the Commission on the company. The Commission has required Microsoft to share communications protocols -- or software rules of the road -- with rival makers of computer servers, ruling that it abused its dominance of the Windows operating system. Microsoft does not want to share that information with "open source" publishers who might make public what it says is confidential information. "This filing is the result of the agreement reached...

Hackers like Jeremy Allison would rather pore over source code than legal documents, but the recent Microsoft antitrust settlement decision has the Samba leader thinking about lawsuits. Patent lawsuits.

The open-source developer fears that, having settled its long-running antitrust suit, Microsoft will now become more aggressive in competing with open-source software. And for Samba -- software that allows Windows machines to read files on Linux servers -- as well as other open-source projects that compete with Microsoft's products, that may mean dealing with patent lawsuits.
