Thousands of dancers from Rio de Janeiro's elite samba schools rolled out their traditional parades of feathers and sequins as the main business of the giant annual Carnival got under way last night.
In total, 14 samba schools from the elite so-called 'special group' will be taking part in the parades last night and on Monday evening at the packed purpose-built stadium known as the Sambadrome, to compete for the prestigious Carnival title.
Each school, featuring up to 4,000 shimmering dancers, elaborate giant floats and deafening percussion, will take 75 minutes to parade down the 700 yards long Sambadrome track.
The Carnival formally kicked off Friday with the traditional symbolic passing of a key to the city to the festival's 'King' - unleashing giant street parties known as 'blocos' in Rio, Sao Paulo and across Brazil.

Yeah...and the fact that it is based on the religious calendar makes it all the more insulting.
A little fun never killed anybody and I wish new Orleans wasn’t so far! :)
I thought there was supposed to be a beautiful aspect to this...hell, I've raised Spotted Poland China sows that looked better than them and didn't sweat as much, either.
You got that right. No wonder the Nazis fled to Argentina instead after the War.
Yeah, they’re just celebrating being alive.
Life is short. Dance a little. Drink a little. Smile a lot. Enjoy the ride while you can.
It looked to me like a bunch of female power lifters got dressed up in fancy costumes. Didn’t appeal to me.
Still, lots of seriously not-guilty dancers pictured.
Im not seeing much joy there.
They looked healthier than many of the muffin-tops I see around my area.
I’m amazed at what went into it; the costumes and floats.
If you are interested, you can read a segment of it here at O Americano, Outra Vez!...I have always found him extremely interesting and entertaining, probably because I am more reserved than him by nature, and I have always found him to be entertainingly unreserved.
I know he is a bit of a Lefty in some ways, but I think he is more of a Libertarian in many respects, and very conservative in others. He was quite a complex and entertaining man!
Looking at the excerpt from his book I linked to, the first line says "...One time I picked up a hitchhiker who told me how interesting South America was, and that I ought to go there. I complained that the language is different, but he said just go ahead and learn it - it's no big problem. So I thought, that's a good idea: I'll go to South America..."
When you read his book and learn more about him...that is the way he did things! Oh, South America? I guess I'll go...!
I personally am not interested in the Carnival type of thing, since it seems to be a homosexual thing, but I don't care what people do as long as I am not obligated to sign on to it or pay homage to it.
I must say, it would probably be prudent to have Crocodile Dundee vet them before remarking on their attractiveness...just sayin!
As a Petty Officer in Naples said to me after being chased by an angry knife-wielding transvestite while we were on Shore Patrol duty...he had his hands on his knees panting and said between breaths with a big grin “She looked like grandma, but sounded like grandpa!”
Longing for the good ole fun days of Sodom and Gomorrah do ye?
“Longing for the good ole fun days of Sodom and Gomorrah do ye?”
That didn’t turn out very well for Sodom and Gomorrah, did it? Seems like we are heading in the same direction!
Some floats look like they were inspired by Pokemon
Looks a lot more family friendly than the Folsom Street Fair.
Reparations demanded by American politicians.
They definitely looked healthy - like they could kick a field goal from the 50 yard line.
