When Slap Shot was released on Feb. 25, 1977, it was a middling success. Despite mostly negative reviews that tended to focus on what they saw as the film's glorification of violence, it eventually went on to earn $28 million at the box office against a $6 million budget. In the following decades, its popularity exploded as it became a textbook example of what makes a cult-classic movie. The film was conceived of by screenwriter Nancy Dowd, whose brother Ned was playing for the Johnstown Jets minor-league hockey team in Pennsylvania. Her access to this world gave the film an...

Does anybody remember the film "Slap Shot?" I ran across a Trailer on UTUBE that brought back the Hockey Mania in Boston in the 60's and 70's. In those days you could always get tickets to the Celtics but the Bruins were always sold out. My cousin was a Gallery God, we always got in along with an ample supply of beer from the packy across the street. The most interesting thing I saw were the women in the crowd calling for blood during a brawl, common in the old days, reminded me of Rome. The movie reflected alot of...

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - The script was perfect for the first NHL goal by the son of one of the notorious Hanson brothers from the movie "Slap Shot." Christian Hanson got it against his favorite player, Martin Brodeur, and the Toronto Maple Leafs rookie didn't seem to care it didn't come on a slap shot. "To be honest I would have taken it any way it would have gone in. Off my head, off my butt, off my skate, and luckily it went off my stick," said Hanson, whose backhander capped a three-goal first period that led Toronto to a...

Vikings Go On Rampage At Lodge Presumedly seeking revenge against the Mid-Atlantic Hockey League for calling it quits in the middle of the season, several players with the Jamestown Vikings trashed the historic Vikings Lodge on the corner of Washington and West Fourth Street early Thursday, leaving most of the building in shambles. Trash and debris were everywhere, especially on the second and third floors where the stench of beer and rotting food was almost overpowering. Bar stools were smashed through doors, and virtually every piece of glass in the building had been shattered, the broken shards unavoidable underfoot. ‘‘They...
