Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman on Wednesday said President Barack Obama was a “real slow learner” for once again insulting Sin City as a place of reckless spending, the Las Vegas Sun reported. “He has a real psychological hang-up about the entertainment capital of the world,” Goodman said during a press conference called in response to Obama’s latest Vegas gaffe. “I want to assure you, when he comes, I’ll do everything I can to give him the boot back to Washington to visit his failures back there,” Goodman told reporters. Goodman, who switched party affiliation from Democrat to Independent last...
  • Baseball players are wimps

So you dumped my post on baseball players being wimps. But the article had more to do with baseball than just the fact that they cry about the rain and their little outfits get wet. It also had to do with fans and taxpayers. Do you oppose those groups also? Where did my original post go? Or do you just dump what you do not agree with? You would not be perhaps fans of one of the two teams playing?

Waco, Texas (AP) -- An 84-year-old woman accused of trying to run over a neighbor amid a land dispute has been arrested. Ester McCullough of Downsville, near Waco, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony punishable by two to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $10,000. Later Monday, she was released from the McLennan County Jail on a personal recognizance bond, a jail spokeswoman said. McCullough could not be reached for comment Wednesday. In May, she drove into her neighbor's yard, knocking over part of a brick wall, then drove into the...

  • MY 1,000TH SCREEN NAME AT FREEREPUBLIC ZOTTED!!!!!! I NEED A LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!

To my best calculations, this is my 1,000th screen name at Free Republic! This one will undoubtedly soon be banned, and besides this one, I only know of one other that's still active. I first signed on in September 1999, and I only had a dozen screen names for the first two years. But when the fascist mods showed up, the screen names multiplied. On some days I have had as many as 6! Here's to disrupting the most dangerous website in America! You guys are fools for supporting this place.
  • Against zotting...

As someone who was (unfairly?) zotted oh so many moons ago because as a n00b I didn't understand the point to which some mods didn't understand sarcasm, I would like to put forward the (perhaps heretical) notion that we shouldn't be quite so quick on the zot. Recently, a FReeper put forward the notion of a "probationary period" before being allowed to post. I would argue that as long as the posts are rated "PG" (I understand that this is a family chat board) we should allow ALL viewpoints to be presented here. There are a couple of good reasons:...
  • Howell Raines Lets Fly His Hatred for Fox News

The always modest, always charming Howell Raines, executive editor of the New York Times, has a new autobiography out, “The One that Got Away,” a sequel to his 1993 memoir “Fly Fishing Through the Midlife Crisis.” Dipping into his latest book on his love of fly fishing, we find Raines still rising to the conservative-bashing bait. On page 189, he lets fly with thoughts about liberal bugbear Fox News: “Fox, by its mere existence, undercuts the argument that the public is starved for ‘fair’ news, and not just because Fox shills for the Republican Party and panders to the latest...
  • Stem Cell Basics (What are stem cells and why are they ZOTTED?)

    10/07/2005 1:53:36 PM PDT · by law of conservation · 6 replies · 330+ views
Stem cells have two important characteristics that distinguish them from other types of cells. First, they are unspecialized cells that renew themselves for long periods through cell division. The second is that under certain physiologic or experimental conditions, they can be induced to become cells with special functions such as the beating cells of the heart muscle or the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. Scientists primarily work with two kinds of stem cells from animals and humans: embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells, which have different functions and characteristics that will be explained in this document. Scientists discovered ways...

Bryan James Epis, the first person associated with a California medical marijuana dispensary to be tried in federal court for growing pot, was sentenced Monday in Sacramento to a mandatory 10 years in prison.

Epis, 35, insists the crop in his Chico house was only for himself and four other seriously ill people whose physicians had recommended the drug in conformance with California's 1996 Compassionate Use Act. But he ran head-on into federal law that makes no allowance for medical necessity.
