Apparently New Yorker contributing writer Graciela Mochkofsky hasn't gotten the message yet, which has been repeated over and over again for the past few years, that a vast majority of the Spanish speaking community in the United States finds the incredibly awkward word "Latinx" to be both absurd as well as offensive. In 2020, Washington Post reporter Jose A. Del Real wrote that "Users of “Latinx” are accused of being out of touch with working-class Latino communities and of practicing linguistic imperialism on the Spanish language, which, like French and Italian, is grammatically gendered."Mochkofsky's Friday story, "A Different Kind of Bid...

WASHINGTON — The Trump White House no habla español. Well, un poquito. After a succession of administrations that embraced Spanish-language content, President Donald Trump's White House is all but ignoring Spanish speakers even though he has a robust online presence in English. His administration has yet to offer a Spanish White House website. It has eliminated the position of director of Hispanic media outreach. And its Spanish-language Twitter account is heavy with English text and features sloppy translations. White House press secretary Sean Spicer said in January that the administration had its "IT folks working overtime" to roll out a...

When Hispanic residents of downtown Allentown want to grab a bite, get their hair cut or shop for groceries, they often head to Seventh Street — but they don’t call it that. To them, it’s Calle Siete. A councilman wants to honor the city’s growing Hispanic population by installing decorative Spanish-language street signs on one of its main commercial thoroughfares, where a profusion of Latino-owned restaurants, barbershops and corner stores reflects the rapidly changing demographics of the state’s third-largest city. Hispanics now represent nearly half the population of 120,000. But where Democratic Councilman Julio Guridy and other residents and business...

Police officers in Jackson, Mississippi are now required to take a Spanish-language class four times a year, according to Jackson Police Department Police Chief Lee Vance. “The purpose of this program is for our officers to learn basic commands,” said Vance. “We’re not looking to make anybody fluent.” Vance also said the Spanish class is a part of a pre-scheduled Jackson Police Department’s in-service training program which included topics like constitutional law and reviewing pursuit policies. Each Spanish class is two-hours long and mandatory for all officers. If an officer refuses to attend the class—which has never happened—he or she...

"..............The AP says the translations on so poor that many users feel they were computer-generated. The name of the site, CuidadoDeSalud.gov, can be litterally read as “for the caution of health.” One health navigator who works in Miami told the wire service that, if anything, the site is written in “Spanglish.”....

IRGC and the spiritual vacuum of Latin American leftists The following is a glimpse of the kind of thing I often see while researching the activities of the IRGC (writ large) in Latin America. Communism fails to provide for the spiritual needs of leftwing political activists, and the Islamic Republic of Iran seems to have done a pretty good job of inserting themselves and the Khomeinist version of Shiism into that void. (Either that or the IRI is throwing lots of money around and the leftists are whores, which is certainly possible, but for the moment I'll take the more...

Several media outlets endorsed the movement, including CNBC, the Today Show, E!, HGTV, Philadelphia Magazine, Ms. Magazine, The View, and numerous Spanish-language media. Even the New York Stock...

Some years ago, I visited a cafe in an American border town, right across the river. Not a soul was conversing in English. But this was no "They're all speaking Spanish" experience. The town was Madawaska, Maine. The river was the St. John, and the language was a kind of French.Last year, I came across a parallel, southern version of border dining -- in Brownsville, Texas. Local friends took me to Betty's Tortas, where everyone was speaking Spanish. A student of Spanish, I tried to order, but the language of Cervantes got me nowhere at Betty's. The confused waiter turned...

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Ads criticizing Sen. The ad campaign targeting the Nevada Democrat is funded by the Republican National Committee and will air in Las Vegas, Reno, Tucson and Phoenix, GOP officials said Thursday. The ads are part of the continued political fallout from the collapse of compromise legislation forged last week by Senate leaders. The deal was scuttled when Sen. Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., rejected a series of...

WASHINGTON -- Candidates for Congress and governor aired more than 16,000 Spanish-language television spots during the 2002 campaign, and politicians seeking federal, statewide or legislative office spent at least $16 million on such advertisements, a researcher reported today. Media consultants interviewed for the report expect higher spending in 2004, when there is a presidential election and as many as 1 million Hispanic voters are expected to be registered to vote, said Adam Segal, director of Johns Hopkins University's Hispanic Voter Project. "What I think this is all about is about empowerment," said Frank Guerra, president of a San Antonio marketing...
