All hope for Steven Spielberg’s racially divisive West Side Story remake died in week two, plummeting 68 percent with a humiliating take of just $3.4 million. After ten days in release, which includes two weekends, this historic box office bomb has grossed just $17.9 million. The hope had been that word of mouth would give Woke Side box office legs. Sorry, nope. No legs. Just two little stumps. Between production and marketing, this stinker probably cost close to $200 million. As a result, Disney’s going to lose a fortune.

Steven Spielberg, IN ONLY INTERVIEW WORLDWIDE BEFORE 'MUNICH' RELEASE Discusses CONTROVERSIAL New Film to Open Dec. 23. ‘There has never been an adequate tribute paid to the Israeli athletes who were murdered in ’72,’ Spielberg says. “I don’t think any movie or any book or any work of art can solve the stalemate in the Middle East today,” director Steven Spielberg tells TIME in an exclusive cover-story interview. “But it’s certainly worth a try,” Spielberg says. Since filming began in June, the movie (reported to cost around $70 million) “has been surrounded by rumors, criticism, and suggestions that Spielberg was...

UNDER-FIRE MP George Galloway is in talks to have a Hollywood movie made about his life. The Scot - who is facing claims that he took cash from Saddam Hussein - has met with US actor and director Sean Penn to discuss the project. Galloway sidekick Ron McKay is also to feature in the film, which documents their early days in Dundee through to their infamous meetings with the Iraqi dictator. Film chiefs hope to cash in on Galloway's popularity since he blasted the US Senate over Iraq. McKay, a writer who shares a flat with Galloway in London, said"Sean Penn...

Runaway bride Jennifer Wilbanks made a deal with a company that is pitching a movie about her life to networks - annoying officials who spent thousands of dollars searching for her. ReganMedia, a New York multimedia company, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution for a story in Thursday's papers it has acquired all media rights to the "life stories" of Wilbanks and her fiance, John Mason. The company did not say whether any money had changed hands. "I am looking forward to developing the scripted project with Wilbanks and Mason," company president Judith Regan said in a statement. "Theirs is an unexpected...

LOS ANGELES, May 9 - Now Hollywood is starting to get worried. The poor box-office performance last weekend of the first major film of the summer, "Kingdom of Heaven," released by 20th Century Fox, made for 11 weeks in a row of declining movie attendance and revenue compared with last year, adding up to the longest slump since 2000 and raising an uncomfortable question: Are people turning away from lackluster movies, or turning their backs on the whole business of going to theaters? The historical epic about the Crusades, which stars Orlando Bloom and was directed by Ridley Scott, took...

went to Kingdom of Heaven last night, and since i'm a huge fan of these type of pictures: full blown epics, i loved it. Of course, i could see why someone would not like it. First off, I was most impressed by: the sets and the costumes are awesome, like all of Ridley's Scott's other films, "black hawk down', ' gladiator' you are seriously thrown back into the time that he is trying to create and in this picture, you can feel the Crusades and you feel it. Much has been in the presses about how the film would portray...

Whenever I see a movie that's interesting, I check FR to see if there was a discussion about it. So I'm starting this thread about the movie "CRASH." I just got back from seeing it and it was very, very interesting. It was set in LA and it examined race, prejudice, stereotypes...from every angle. It was very non-judgemental and there's no good guy/bad guy thing going on. If and when you see it, I'd like to know what you think. Definitely one of the best movies I've seen this year.

This September, Warner Brothers will release writer/director Stephen Gaghan's "Syriana," part of Hollywood's next wave of films that will more directly 'engage' the War on Terror. The film stars George Clooney and Matt Damon, and takes place just prior to the first Gulf War. Details of the film are sketchy, but this report from a private screening recently surfaced on Ain't It Cool News: "It tells a complicated story about oil, the corruption in American government, and the Persian Gulf. Clooney and Damon each have their own story: George as an old school ... Middle East agent for the CIA...

Production on the film, being developed by indie firm Cameo FJ Entertainment, is set for August in New Zealand and...

Another classic '70s TV show could be coming to movie screens in the near future. Following the successful big screen updates of "Starsky & Hutch" and "Charlie's Angels," Paramount Pictures has bought the feature film rights to the hit series "The Partridge Family," The Hollywood Reporter says. Producer Billy Gerber told The Hollywood Reporter he plans to make a "mainstream family movie in the vein of 'School of Rock.'" "The Partridge Family" series followed the comical experiences of a family of musicians. Paramount is also developing a big-screen adaptation of the popular show "21 Jump Street," which starred Johnny...

Hollywood is in a huff that Americans are staying away from the movies in droves. It just can't seem to make the connection between the horrible quality of its recent releases and the disastrous box-office figures. Critics as well as Joe and Jane Sixpack have been holding their noses at such duds as "The Butterfly Effect," "Paycheck," "The Perfect Score," "Torque" and "Win a Date With Tad Hamilton." "The year got off to a frigid start as the national box office in January registered an anemic $628.8 million - the lowest gross in the past four years. And worse yet,...
