A new study has discovered that tattoo inks could be linked to cancer or organ failure. An analysis of 54 inks commonly used in tattoo parlors across America has uncovered that a staggering 45 of them contained unlisted additives, including chemicals known to pose alarming health risks. Multiple inks contained 2-phenoxyethanol, which can cause toxic effects in high doses. Researchers involved in the study found the most common additive to be polyethylene glycol, which is a compound that can cause acute renal failure. The study was led by Jonn Swierk from the Department of Chemistry at Binghamton University, and was...

Depicts the use of "paramedic camouflage" to cover tatoos. Didn't even know they still made the stuff, but I used to use it to cover hideous scars years ago. This young man's plight is a sad one, although he did it to himself and has no-one to blame but himself. He will regret this as he gets older.

Mario Barth may be the only tattoo artist who admits that getting inked hurts. While many artists and even some customers insist the process is pain-free — some even say it feels good — Barth has become famous to the extent that he can call it like he sees it without risk of turning away customers or rankling others in the business.

Recruit's tattoo on saluting arm becomes a problem Wednesday, December 02, 2009 By Sadie Gurman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette A tattoo that passed muster when Kayla Bresnan was sworn into the U.S. Air Force in April might now keep her from service thanks to a rule quietly implemented last week. On Monday, the day before she was to ship out to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio for basic training, she was told by an Air Force official that the 3-inch-by-3-inch theatrical mask on her "saluting arm" is no longer acceptable. He called a cab and sent her back to her...

NEW BEDFORD — The artist responsible for the painting of Jesus at Lund's Corner has come forward, albeit reluctantly. Mark Carvalho, 31, a New Bedford man and professional artist, told the Standard-Times on Saturday that he painted the image and affixed it to the outer wall of Premier Video on Ashley Blvd. to brighten up the wall — and send a message. "The wall that's there is kind of a blank, dismal wall," he said. "It was void of any emotion or anything." Now, the image of Jesus apparently shielding his eyes from the world has caused emotion to well...

I don't know a single Democrat not on a political payroll who is enthusiastic about state Treasurer Phil Angelides' run for governor. In the Capitol, many Dems can't stand the guy. No one can argue with a straight face that Angelides has a serious plan to balance state finances. If Schwarzenegger is the free-lunch governor -- he won't raise taxes and has failed to slice spending to eliminate the state's $4 billion to $5 billion structural budget shortfall -- Angelides offers free lunch followed by free desert. Angelides' recipe for state finances: no new taxes, unless you're rich, and a...

Tattoos and piercings are ways for an individual to express their personality, but most employers are looking for presentable employees. "I think that appearance is very important, [because] it lets the employer know that you know how to take care of yourself," said Eric Constantine, the manager of Athlete's House in Nashville. It can be a very difficult choice whether or not to have your ears pierced or to get a tattoo, as Lisa Stevens, a freshman, found out. "I really wanted the lifeguard job at the local pool back home," she said. "The only thing was that I also...

Meet Damon Conklin, organizer of this weekend's Seattle Tattoo Convention. See him in his milieu, his roomy Super Genius shop on Capitol Hill. The music blares. Sample racks of tribal, skull and voluptuous-women tattoos hang from the ochre-colored walls. See him in his milieu much later one evening, still in his shop, but with a blue "Bible Study" binder in his lap. "If it's one point I always try to drive home, it's that you cannot judge a book by its cover," Conklin, 38, says. Tattoo enthusiasts have long been at the receiving end of gawks or scornful remarks. The...

An NYPD Police Academy recruit of Middle Eastern heritage sports a bold tattoo spelling out the word "JIHAD" on his forearm, with a large sword drawn beneath it — and there's nothing the department can do about it, The Post has learned. The extraordinary markings caused a stir around the academy as soon as the 6-foot tall probationary cop rolled up his sleeves and revealed the tattoo. "People were shocked to see it," one source said. The controversy prompted police brass to interview the officer, who said that "JIHAD" is his nickname and made it clear that he had no...

The young man sitting in the corner of Starbucks looks like a typical twentysomething in his blue T-shirt and relaxed fit jeans. A closer look reveals tattoos on his face and arms. It’s written all over his body: This man was a gang member. The man, who asked that his identity be kept secret, says he joined a Portland gang at age 15. “I think I was just young and impressionable,” he says. “It didn’t seem like I could fit in anywhere else.” He says he spent his teenage years drinking, fighting and causing mayhem. Then, in his early 20s,...

NASHUA — A Brookline woman is suing a Nashua tattoo shop because of a belly button piercing that allegedly went horribly awry. Kaitlin M. Brew, 20, said an employee at Tattoo America pierced much too deep, poking straight through to Brew's stomach. The injury, which went undiagnosed for more than two years, caused months of constant pain and eventually required exploratory surgery, Brew said. "It's not a pretty thing whatsoever, I have to admit," Brew said yesterday, describing her experience.
