Clarksville, TN (CU) - The locals and Marine Corp called it the birdcage. The US Navy referred to the location as Site #3. Before 1965, even the guards at Clarksville Base weren’t aware of what they were guarding. Operated by the US Navy and guarded by the US Marine Corp, Clarksville Base was layered with intense security. The parameter included four spaced fences with at least one being electrical. In addition to the four fences surrounding the perimeter, there were armed marine patrols with orders of “shoot to kill” attempts to breach the base. Three deaths were recorded at the...

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — At first, the cheers for U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz were louder than those for the man he came to stump for Friday morning, but that changed. Cruz, R-Texas, came to Knoxville in support of Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Dr. Manny Sethi and a crowd of nearly 200 people crammed inside a dining room of the Southern Rail Station to hear from the two as Sethi attempts to go toe-to-toe with Bill Hagerty, the former U.S. ambassador to Japan. The race has both tightened and gotten uglier in recent weeks ahead of the August 6 Election Day. Both...

In this tense summer of racial unrest, cities around the country have erupted in violence. The damage estimate for MinneapolisÂ’ riots is more than $500 million for the first weekend alone. Portland is heading into its eighth week of destructive riots. Even Christopher Columbus could not escape the anger of the mob as they toppled his statue into BaltimoreÂ’s inner harbor. One large American city has maintained peaceful protests night after night: Memphis, Tennessee. Given that Memphis is routinely listed among the countryÂ’s most dangerous cities, it is hardly a place one would expect to escape the scourge of violence....

Today’s show of Hagpocrisy used to try and smear Dr. Manny and manipulate voters is simply outrageous. But it also shows voters that Hagerty is a hypocrite, willing to say and do anything so he can join his Establishment cronies in the U.S. Senate. First the Tennessee Establishment empire warned Dr. Manny not to even consider running. We know “they” had already made their pick and “they” wanted another Establishment guy to ascend to Lamar’s seat. Why else would “they” have made multiple calls to Dr. Manny telling him not to run? Even Mitch McConnell’s National Republican Senatorial Committee called...

A Confederate flag banner was flown over the Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee on Wednesday ahead of NASCAR’s All-Star Race. The banner flown over the Wednesday race also included the website “SCV.org,” a website operated by the organization The Sons of Confederate Veterans, USA Today reported. The organization also claimed credit for a banner showing the Confederate Flag that was flown over a race in Talladega, Fla. last month. Bristol Herald Courier reporter Tim Dodson shared footage of the banner Wednesday. NASCAR in June banned displays of the flag at all of its events and properties, saying that it “runs...

Justin Timberlake is calling for the removal of Confederate monuments across the country. The singer, who is from Tennessee, posted his comments on Instagram on Monday along with a video on the subject from the American Civil Liberties Union. “America was built by men who believed in and benefitted from racism. Plain and simple,” Timberlake said in the caption. “...those men who proudly owned and abused Black people are STILL celebrated all over the country.” Timberlake cited a statistic that there are about 1,848 Confederate statues in the country. “More than half are in The South, and it’s not acceptable,”...

Shuford’s Smoke House says leftists threatened to burn down their business after the accepted an order from “Back the Blue” police supporters. Owners of Shuford’s smoke house say organizers of today’s Back the Blue contacted them to order food for the event. The protesters lit the flag on fire before placing it in a garbage can and extinguishing the fire. "Do not despair. From destruction comes creation. Let us invoke a new world from these ashes," a woman dressed as Lady Liberty said. She then led a chant of, "What do we want? Justice. When do we want it? Now." . . Planned Parenthood did not respond to an email request for comment on the video.

I missed this when it was published Thursday. The Washington Post’s Philip Bump did a fact-check of sorts on a claim made by President Trump: “You hear about certain places like Chicago and you hear about what’s going on in Detroit and other — other cities, all Democrat run,” he said. “Every one of them is Democrat run. Twenty out of 20. The 20 worst, the 20 most dangerous are Democrat run.” It’s not clear how Trump is defining “most dangerous” in this context. So let’s look at two related sets of data compiled by the FBI: most violent...

An 88-year-old liquor store owner was arrested for shooting a robbery suspect. Owner May Boyce was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after a man allegedly lunged at her while trying to steal from her. “I did what I had to do, and I hope word gets out on the street that I’m fed up and I’m not taking it anymore,” May Boyce told the New York Post after she was released on $10,000 bond. “You’ve got to stick up for yourself sometimes.” Boyce said that she has been robbed multiple times while working at her shop, Murfreesboro...

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – The Tennessee Department of Transportation has “respectfully denied” the Metro Council’s request to block the Nathan Bedford Forrest statue on Interstate 65. The council approved a resolution to ask TDOT to plant trees blocking its view to the public on July 8. The statue, which is surrounded by Confederate flags, sits on private property near the Harding Place exit. Monday, the department sent the following statement to News 2: TDOT does not plant foliage on its right-of-way with the sole intention of blocking items on private property based on what might be offensive to some and...

A bid by Tennessee’s governor to remove a bust of Confederate cavalry general, slave trader and early Ku Klux Klan leader Nathan Bedford Forrest from the state Capitol building was rejected Friday. The State Capitol Commission voted 7-5 against issuing a petition to moving the bust from the Capitol to the new state museum being built nearby. It would have been the first step in a lengthy process laid out by Tennessee’s “Heritage Protection Act” that limits the removal or changing of historical memorials on public property. Republican Gov. Bill Haslam called for the removal after last month’s deadly white...

(CNN) The remains of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest and his wife will be removed from a Memphis park where a monument of him once stood. The decision to move their remains came after the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a non-profit organization of male descendants of Confederate veterans, agreed to drop a pending lawsuit against park owners

The quotes below appear towards the end of the linked article about Gen Forrest's complicated life. I found them to be so remarkable that if you don't read anything else about the self-described "most maligned" Southerner, you should read these words. For hidden in them is a remarkable story redemption and change. It brought tears to my eyes.

Republican Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn penned a letter to Attorney General William Barr Monday urging the Department of Justice to conduct a thorough antitrust investigation into Google’s monopolistic power over the internet after the tech giant’s recent attack on The Federalist. “As your antitrust investigation of Google intensified, I urge you to thoroughly scrutinize how the company’s anticompetitive practices could lead to the crippling of journalistic freedom,” Blackburn wrote. “I also ask that your probe examine abuses in both the online advertising and online search markets, and to take enforcement action swiftly before further economic harm results.” The letter comes...
