A pest controller has snared a monster 21-inch long rat he believes is the biggest ever caught in Britain. Terry Walker, 53, was working with his trusty dog Max when they trapped the enormous creature as it was shuffling from beneath some rubbish behind a row of shops in Bournemouth on Friday. The catch means Mr Walker has regained the record he lost last year to rival exterminator Daren George.
  • [2016] Would Margaret Thatcher have backed Brexit?

Charles Powell, her most important private secretary, now believes that she would have negotiated a deal quite like David Cameron’s latest, and urged a Remain vote. Norman Tebbit, one of her most senior and like-minded ministers, says the opposite. I shall not break my rule by agreeing or disagreeing with either. But the story of Mrs Thatcher and Europe does reveal something interesting. The whole time she was in office, she never said that Britain should leave. Once she had left office, she said privately – to me and several others – that she thought we should.

Donald Trump will meet the Queen when he visits Britain next month, the US ambassador to the UK has told Sky News. The president is due in Britain for a working visit on Friday 13 July - his first to the country since being elected in 2016. It is not a state visit with all the pomp and ceremony that comes with that, so the pair would not necessarily need to meet. But ambassador Robert Wood Johnson said that while plans have not yet been finalised, they will involve the president meeting Her Majesty. "Meeting Her Majesty is the most...
  • Russia Expels U.S. Diplomats, Closes Consulate and Wants Chemical Weapons Case Over Spy Poisoning

Russia announced Thursday it would expel 60 U.S. diplomats, close the U.S. Consulate General in St. Petersburg and open an extraordinary United Nations session in response to Western reactions over accusations that Moscow was behind the poisoning of an ex-Soviet spy in the U.K. Russia has denied being responsible for an alleged nerve agent attack earlier this month that has left former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter hospitalized. London, fellow Western and allied governments and the U.S.-led NATO military alliance, however, have collectively dismissed more than 100 Russian diplomats in response. Having promised retaliatory actions against a number...

... Now police say his daughter might have brought it from Russia in her suitcase - but it is just the latest of a series of bizarre theories Thirteen days after Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were attacked with a nerve agent in Salisbury, police appear to be no nearer any answers as to how the pair were poisoned. Theories banded around in the past fortnight include food poisoning, a bouquet of flowers laced with the deadly substance Novichok and the lethal toxin being smeared on the former agent's car door handle. Now, it is understood investigators have turned...

Trump visit to UK downgraded to 'working visit' amid threats of mass protestsDonald Trump is set to visit Britain early in 2018 - but for a stripped-down trip that will not include staying with the Queen. Diplomats are discussing plans for a “working visit” by the US president that will be shorn of the pomp and flummery of a full-blown State Visit. And instead of a red carpet event to showcase the special relationship, it is likely to form part of a tour of several countries by Mr Trump. The downgrading of Mr Trump’s first trip as President to...

FULL TITLE: Theresa May won't commit to intervening over Charlie Gard treatment row - but is 'confident' doctors will consider new information Theresa May says she is "confident" doctors will consider new information in the case of desperately ill baby Charlie Gard - but would not commit to intervening in the row over his treatment. Charlie's parents, Connie Yates and Chris Gard, had hoped to take him to the US for experimental treatment. But they lost a legal fight for the right to take him out of the country, after a pair of court rulings in Strasborg and London in...

British Prime Minister Theresa May on Sunday responded to the country’s fight against Islamic extremism, calling for tougher measures to fight terrorists after attackers killed seven people and injured nearly 50 in vehicle and stabbing assaults in a busy area of London Saturday night. The attack, the third this year and coming days before a nationwide vote in Britain, ended when police shot and killed three attackers at the scene of the carnage at London Bridge and Borough Market. The prime minister delivered a stark assessment of the situation, adding: “It is time to say: Enough is enough.”

Washington (CNN)The White House has apologized to the British government after alleging that a UK intelligence agency spied on President Donald Trump at the behest of former President Barack Obama. National security adviser H.R. McMaster spoke with his British counterpart on Thursday about press secretary Sean Spicer's comment from the White House podium about a Fox News report that said British intelligence helped wiretap Trump Tower during the 2016 campaign, a White House official said Friday. The official described the conversation as "cordial" where McMaster described Spicer's comment as "unintentional." McMaster also told his counterpart that "their concerns were understood...

Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has apparently snubbed Theresa May over the UK’s support of a highly critical UN resolution condemning Israeli settlement building. The move is the latest in a series of diplomatic retaliations by Israel against the countries that supported a UN security council resolution describing Jewish settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories as a “flagrant violation” of international law and an obstacle to peace.
