How Does Tom Allen Keep His Promise to US Vets If....? Would Tom Allen Recognize a U.S. Vet if He Saw One? Tom Allen’s campaign for U.S. Senator website is promoting a feature called, “Keeping Our Promise To American’s Veterans,” with a series of photos. But how does Tom Allen keep his promise to American Veterans if he doesn’t know what one looks like? The picture below from Allen's website is a stock photo of a Royal Navy sailor. A U.S. Navy sailor would not be wearing a beard. The weapon in the picture is a British weapon. This isn’t...

WASHINGTON — Neither congressional race in Maine this year will feature a contested primary, since the filing deadline passed Monday for Democratic Reps. Tom Allen and Mike Michaud and their Republican challengers. But Michaud's 2nd Congressional District race in northern Maine could still become a three-way contest if a prospective candidate runs as an independent. Allen, of Portland, who is in his fourth term, faces a challenge from Charles Summers, who spent eight years as state director for U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine. Allen, a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, has won previous contests easily, with 64 percent...

WASHINGTON — Thousands of Maine families with low or moderate incomes won't qualify for the $400 child tax credit that more-affluent families will receive under the tax cut signed by President Bush. Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe and congressional Democrats criticized Republican congressional leaders Thursday for refusing to make low-wage earners eligible for the increased child tax credit. In the tax-cut compromise struck by negotiators in a House-Senate conference committee, the increased credit was made available only to families that earned enough to pay taxes. In Maine, that means the parents of an estimated 40,000 children won't benefit from the credit....
