So, this past week the Guam government and the National Weather Service warned us about the monster typhoon of all monster typhoons. "Prepare to die! We're gonna have 250mph winds! Your house will be picked up by the wind and be blown all the way to Malaysia! It'll be a horrible death!" It turns out they shouldn't have even canceled school. What a massively wrong prediction. There is no cat-5 typhoon making a direct hit on the island. There is a tropical storm passing to the north of the island. We'll get 45 mph winds and 4 to 5 inches...

At Farnborough 2018, the Spice 250 is being displayed as an option for both the Eurofighter Typhoon and Saab Gripen. Rafael’s Spice 250 electro-optical/infrared-guided glide bomb is on course to achieve initial operational capability with the Israel Air and Space Force next year, following a third test campaign earlier this year that saw the 100-km (62-mile) range weapon successfully engage moving, maritime, and time-critical targets. A few more qualification tests are due to be undertaken, with low-rate production just getting under way. At Farnborough 2018, the weapon is being displayed as an option for both the Eurofighter Typhoon and Saab...

Photograph: Peter Nicholls/Reuters The defence secretary, Gavin Williamson, has unveiled plans for a new RAF fighter jet, the Tempest, which will eventually replace the Eurofighter Typhoon. Speaking at the Farnborough airshow, Williamson unveiled a model of the sixth-generation fighter jet the Ministry of Defence (MoD) expects to emerge from its new combat air strategy, designed to maintain the UK’s status as a so-called “tier one” military power after Brexit. “This is a strategy to keep control of the air, both at...

Typhoons from the original Saudi batch have seen action over Yemen. (Photo: Jamie Hunter/Eurofighter) On March 9 the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia signed a Memorandum of Intent (MoI) with the UK government to purchase 48 Eurofighter Typhoon swing-role fighters. Leading the sale on behalf of the Eurofighter partner companies, BAE Systems—along with the UK government—had been pursuing a follow-on Saudi buy for several years, having earlier sold 72 Typhoons to the Kingdom. For the partner companies and their suppliers throughout Europe the deal, if finalized, represents a major boost, coming on top of a Qatari order for 24 Typhoons signed...

Defence group BAE Systems’ shares jumped in early trading as investors reacted to a long-awaited export sale of the company’s Typhoon jet fighters. BAE shares rose almost 3pc after a £5bn sale of 24 of jets along with a training and support package to Gulf nation Qatar was announced on Sunday afternoon. BAE, Airbus and Italy's Leonardo each have a one-third share in the Typhoon programme. The deal also threw a lifeline to BAE’s programme building the Hawk training jet - the aircraft flown by the Red Arrows - whose production line is running out of orders. Qatar’s purchase also...

DOHA (Reuters) - Qatar’s defense minister has signed a letter of intent to purchase 24 Typhoon jets from British defense group BAE Systems, in a move that could anger other Gulf countries boycotting Doha. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain cut diplomatic and trade links with Qatar on June 5, suspending air and shipping routes with the world’s biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas, which is home to the region’s biggest U.S. military base. “The letter of intent includes the ministry’s intention to purchase 24 modern Typhoon aircraft with all their equipment,” state news agency QNA reported on Sunday....

Inside the ultimate test drive: How British test pilots put the Eurofighter Typhoon through its paces British test pilots from BAE Systems have lifted the lid on how they push the Eurofighter Typhoon combat jet to the edge of its limits as part of an ‘ultimate test drive’ before delivering the aircraft to customers including the Royal Air Force. The jet’s power, speed and agility are all brought to the fore as test pilots, based at Warton, Lancashire, take the controls of each Typhoon for the first time – as soon as they roll out from the factory floor to...

The Akula-class nuclear submarine is the biggest in the world. Source: Oleg Kuleshov At the end of June the Dmitry Donskoi nuclear submarine left Severodvinsk, the principal base of the Northern Fleet. It entered the White Sea on a mission, one objective of which is to interact with Russia's antisubmarine forces. This is a unique vessel. The submarines of this series (Project 941, or Typhoon, according to NATO's classification) are considered the biggest in the world. Their length of 124 meters is comparable to two football fields, while the height of this naval predator is that of a nine-story building....

British war planes were yesterday scrambled to intercept two Russian bombers capable of carrying nuclear missiles as they flew south of Bournemouth. Typhoon jets on high alert were dispatched from two RAF bases and flew alongside the long-range Russian Bear aircraft until they were out of the region. Last night experts said Vladimir Putin’s move to send planes capable of carrying cruise missiles so close to British shores could be seen as an act of aggression.

Typhoon Hagupit has made landfall in the town of Dolores in the eastern Philippines, the country's weather agency says. The storm knocked out electricity and felled trees in the area, though no casualties have been reported. Over half a million have fled coastal villages in the past few days ahead of the storm's arrival. The typhoon is on course for the city of Tacloban, where thousands were killed by Typhoon Haiyan a year ago. It has weakened slightly but gusts are still peaking at 195km/h (120mph). Thousands of passengers were left stranded after Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific cancelled more...

One U.S. airman has been found dead and two others are missing after waves caused by Typhoon Phanfone swept them away in Okinawa, according to a U.S. military official.  "Three airmen were washed out to sea from the northwest coast of Okinawa," the U.S. Air Force at Kadena Air Base said at 3:45 p.m. local time Sunday.  Typhoon Phanfone is lashing southern Japan with strong wind, high waves and torrential rain as millions brace for what looks to be a direct impact. At one point on Saturday, the U.S. military's Joint Typhoon Warning Center analyzed 150 mph winds within Phanfone, designating it...

British combat air post-2020 will depend on the RAF’s Typhoon fast jet fleet – currently planned to total 107 aircraft at the end of this decade – and the F-35 Lightning II strike fighter, operated jointly by the RAF and the Royal Navy. Then-Secretary of State for Defence Phillip Hammond said in July 2012 that the UK would buy up to forty-eight F-35B short take-off, vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft in the next ten years of the newly agreed equipment plan. These will not only form the fixed-wing complement of the new Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers, but will also deploy with...

China's southern regions are bracing for a powerful typhoon that has ripped through the Philippines, killing dozens and forcing more than 400,000 people to flee their homes. The official death toll from Typhoon Rammasun has climbed to 38, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said on Thursday. Ten people have been injured and eight are missing. Typhoon Rammasun made landfall in the Philippines on Tuesday, just eight months after Super Typhoon Haiyan devastated parts of the country in November 2013. The eye of Typhoon Rammasun passed south of Manila after cutting a path across the main island of...
