Google has abruptly killed off one of its April Fools' Day "jokes" after it caused outrage online, with multiple people claiming that it lost them their jobs.
The premise of the joke was simple. In Gmail, next to the standard "Reply" button, Google added a "Mic drop" button. Using it would reply to the email, archive it — and also add a GIF of a "Despicable Me" minion dropping a mic.
"Email's great, but sometimes you just wanna hit the eject button," Google wrote in a tongue-and-cheek blog post explaining its purpose. "Like those heated threads at work, when everyone's wrong except you (obviously). Or those times when someone's seeking group approval, but your opinion is the only one that matters (amirite?). Or maybe you just nailed it, and there's nothing more to say (bam)."
But the joke backfired — fast.
Its placement directly next to the default Reply button — replacing the "Send and archive" button — meant it was easy to click by accident, especially if a user didn't understand what it was. Google's product forums are full of furious users claiming they pressed the button by accident, often on important professional emails.

This isnt even really an April Fool’s joke.
Shouldn’t people have outgrown April Fools silliness about the time they entered puberty?
There is no case of anyone actually losing a job cited. Just a couple of whiners saying they had lost a potential job or an interview by including this sorry joke on their e-mail.
One jay-bird who had lost a "potential" job says he was scheduled to start on Monday. How would he be scheduled to start on Monday if it was a potential job? And how would anyone composing an e-mail from a Google account "accidentally" include an unintended attachment unless they were half awake or smoking too much weed?
There are some whole companies that use gmail

This is no different than people at my office that have accidentally clicked on “Reply to All”. Sorry, it’s your own fault for being “clicky”.

Several years ago USC in SC spent a fortune on outlook/exchange and had.numerous problems. Google to the rescue.
And since it’s April 1, I don’t believe you’re actually Jimmy Grace.
Was that the real USC in Southern California, or the fake one in South Carolina?

They don’t run it, they own outright.
It could burn to the ground tomorrow and I wouldn’t lose a moment’s sleep as long as no casualties.
Actually, many companies (and universities) use Google Gmail services for their email even though you may not know it on the front end when you see the sender's address.
Why use it? Google is very good at filtering out spam and virus emails. There's also a high delivery rate (i.e. emails sent are less likely to be flagged as spam or otherwise disappear in cyberspace).
Dang complicated newfangled technology. BTW, there should be a permanent "send reply with a kiss my ass graphic" button. Thanks Tolerance Sucks Rocks.
And there are multiple copies of everything on several servers across the world like NSA, TSA, China, IRA... you know just backing stuff up...
We use it at work.
It’s our own address, but, they control the technology.
SO much better than the old system we had.
