A controversial decision to send a pharmacist to jail for life for shooting dead a young man who tried to rob his store has caused a storm of protest.
Jerome Ersland was given a life sentence for the first-degree murder of 16-year-old Antwun Parker at an Oklahoma court last week.
The 59-year-old pharmacist shot the youngster six times during an attempted armed robbery in 2009, leading jurors to decide he had acted beyond the limits of self defence.
Thousands in the area have, however, reacted furiously to the decision, insisting Mr Ersland had simply acted to protect himself, his store and his customers.
The debate has now moved online, with many joining groups in his support and ones that argue his punishment is deserved on Facebook.

I still don’t get this story. Is there something we’re missing? You can’t shoot a robber now? Why?

He hasn’t even been sentenced yet.....He defended himself successfully, was no longer in danger, went and got another gun and shot his unconscious assailant 5 times at point blank range killing him.
Murder, execution style.
He disabled the robber, got another gun and executed him while he was unconscious.
You can post different accounts of stories that are in the news.

The robbery victim said the suspect was moving when shot the second time.
How did you, or anyone else determine the robbery suspect was unconscious?

And a jury of his peers found him guilty.
It is not a different account, the guy was found guilty by the jury. End of story, you either understand the law applied here are you are a little on the dense side. Your choice!!!!
You have every right to kill in self defense if your life is in danger, his life was no longer in danger, he had no right to execute the assailant.
Until the robbing thug perp is pronounced dead on the scene he’s a mortal threat. Moving or not.

Seems reasonable to me, given our legal system (i.e., judges) and the certainty of guilt (in this case). The pharmacist probably saved some lives down the road, given ‘twans fondness of pointing loaded guns (I assume) at people to rob them.
If you attack me, I will do whatever I have to do to keep you from doing so again. Anything else is foolishness. You and I weren’t there, so we don’t know how threatened he was or felt himself to be. The youngster should not have robbed a business. He’d be alive today if he hadn’t. I feel no pity for him, at all.

Watch after the second robber flees after his friend is shot, notice Jerome casually walk back behind the counter, pulls out another gun and then walks back to execute the man. Jerome killing this man was unnecessary and this is why he was convicted of first degree murder.
79 shots in 8 seconds, for someone 14 feet away with a knife. That’s self defense for police. Little people need not apply.
