Anthony Fauci, the top US infectious diseases expert, has warned that baseless “conspiracy theories” are swirling around the coronavirus crisis following claims that America’s official death toll from Covid-19 has been overstated.
Fauci, who has been director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984, said he had seen unfounded conjecture attach itself to previous crises and dismissed the emerging idea, largely promoted by high-profile figures in rightwing media, that the US’s Covid-19 death toll is being inflated by unrelated medical conditions.
“There is absolutely no evidence that that’s the case at all,” Fauci told NBC on Thursday. “I think it falls under the category of something that’s very unfortunate – these conspiracy theories that we hear about. Any time we have a crisis of any sort there is always this popping up of conspiracy theories.”

The very nature of the statistics we are getting makes the definition of "Covid-19 deaths" uncertain and subject to a high variability.

It probably has been somewhat overstated. It may not be a conspiracy per se, but it might be a reflection of organizational biases and agendas at work. In other words, there’s probably an inclination to be liberal with the numbers because its benefical in terms of getting more funding. There’s not an organization or bureaucracy on the planet that doesn’t want more money.

States and Politicians and Hospitals and Pharma Industry all have good reason to overstate deaths ... reasons which do not involve an evil conspiracy. Do they talk, and reinforce each other since they share common interests? Of course! Is that a conspiracy? No ... no more than a locust swarm is a conspiracy of locusts. It's more an expression of nature.
Hospitals are required to treat people, even if indigent and uninsured. Generally they end up eating those costs so they do everything they can to avoid that situation. (this is why Michelle Obama had a $300K per year job redirecting such patients to other hospitals).
Hospitals are seeing this as a golden opportunity to clear their books of these cases by collecting COVID reimbursement.
Too many people in this country are in denial over the fact that healthcare is a bidness.
They recently adjusted it down again from 68 to 60k.
