Simon Sees Davis as 'Big Brother'
Short excerpt from a longer LA Times article ^ | 4/17/02 | MICHAEL FINNEGAN

Posted on 04/17/2002 9:23:37 AM PDT by ElkGroveDan

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon Jr. compared Gov. Gray Davis on Tuesday to Karl Marx and "Big Brother" for demanding that the GOP challenger release his tax returns to prove he paid his fair share of taxes.

"I don't even know what a fair share is," Simon said. "I mean, that sounds like somebody coming out of Moscow, you know? Their fair share. You know, Karl Marx talked like that."

[snip snip]

"Frankly, I think that people are deserving of a certain amount of privacy," he said.

[snip]

The governor's "mind-set is one of big government, and Big Brother is watching," he said. "Big Brother will let you know if you've been behaving yourself. Quite frankly, Brian, I don't need Big Brother to tell me if I've been behaving myself."

This Simon guy tends to grow on you. This was an off-the-cuff radio interview. Clearly he has the Reaganesque instincts that would make us all proud to have him as governor.

This ain't no repeat of the Schundler campaign, which had its problems. When does this guy go on Howard Stern?

He hit the nail on the head: Davis and liberal Democrats want to have the final say over whether someone has been good or bad, paid their fair share or not, deserves praise or retribution.

Bill Simon is so right on ... go get 'em Super Simon!

Yeah. Schundler would have won had he gone on the Stern show. Hopefully Simon will call in. If so he will definitely win the governorship in CA. BTW, Gray Davis kind of reminds me of Tom Cheapasano.

"I don't know who appointed Gray Davis the commissioner of the IRS," Simon said.

ROFLMAO!

OK, maybe I'm just an out-of-the-loop Gen-Xer who has no clue ... but what is it with the Howard Stern show? Why should Bill Simon go on it? I thought Stern was a foul-mouthed anarchist type, basically saying whatever he feels like to piss off the most people. Am I wrong? I have never listened, so I leave it to my FR brethern to set me straight.

Davis told reporters: "Part of running for governor is making available your tax return so people can see you're paying your fair share."

Gag me. Show me the law that anyone has to make public their tax returns. And who decides what's your fair share?

I'll get a year's salary that Bill Simon paid a hell of a lot more in federal and state taxes than Gray Davis did ... and I would probably take the bet that Bill Simon will pay more in federal and state taxes for 2001 than Gray Davis has paid in his entire lifetime!!!!!!!!!

To quote Alan Keyes, how much I make, where I make it, and when I make it should be no body's business but mine. That includes what I choose to spend my income on. It should be a private matter just like what I do in my bedroom with the person I love. Our financial affairs should be none of the government's business any more than who, where and when we choose to have sex with should be its business. Kudos to Bill Simon for telling Gray Davis I don't care to let the government know what shouldn't concern it in the first place.

Posts 121 and 122 have an interesting take on the 1994 Pataki-Cuomo race. Howard Stern just might help outflank the Dems. And in this race, particularly given Gray Davis's lack of results, and his desperation, plus Simon's image as an outsider going against the "system", I think he could win some big points and expand the conservative base.

Stern's pretty conservative on most issues, and while he's not for everyone, he helped get rid of Mario Cuomo. PJ-Comix can tell the tale quite well.

If Simon went on Stern, I'd watch-- but that would be the only time.

Um...start listening to Howard and you will be set straight. BTW, today Howard was pretty funny doing an imprression of a jive talkin' Colin Powell verbally bitch-slapping Yasser Arafat in private.

OK, I read those two posts you directed me to. I will say that you have gotten my interest. However, doesn't this New York personality translate into California votes? How popular is he in California? What's the audience and the demographics? I agree with you that he obviously had an impact on the Pataki race (although '94 was a sweep for Republicans across the nation ... even California won a majority in the Assembly, winning 9 seats held by Democrats).

I am big on talk radio as being a factor in Simon's primary victory. Being able to talk directly to the voters, while they are in their cars (usually) or working or whatnot. Talk radio is a wonderful medium, so I'm listening. Of course, I have no say in the matter, I'm just a Simon volunteer, but I'm still interested.

Lets define fair share as far as federal taxes go.

The federal budget is $2.2 Trillion. There are 270 million people in America. That equals $8,148 per person. So, each persons fair share is $8,148.

If Simon paid more than that, he has paid more than his fair share.

We need to get other GOP types on Stern, too. Bush, whoever runs against Murray in `04, whoever goes up against Torricelli this year. I can think of a few governor's races that could be swung as well.
