Are there any freeper reports from the SUV march on Sacramento yet? I think the radio station was a bit clueless to schedule it on a weekday, so I'm wondering if it was a flop.

I agree... these marchers are all talk... and noooooooooooooo Celica

I haven't seen any reports, and the johnandken.com website seems to be down. They held it on a weekday because they wanted to broadcast during it. I don't know if that was a strategic error or not. In any case, it doesn't seem to have swayed Davis.

IMHO, I agree, Davi$ could be preparing for defeat and in True ClinTon fashion, making as big a mess of things as possible so the repubs will get the blame and the task of cleaning things up.

Nah, Davis doesn't have that kind of mind. He is so arrogant (and so sure the vote fraud fix is in) that he can't even imagine himself losing, no matter what policies he supports. So he endorses this to keep the Left from defecting to the Green Party.

Does Davis ride a horse to work?
Is his limo solar or ENRON powered?

"John, got any pictures, we need a picture!"

Just get some pictures of Havana with all those '57 Chevys and Buicks.

Insurance companies have had to withdraw from CA markets to make a point after Prop. 103 was passed by Harvey Rosenfell!

But what do you do when the whole nation is in an up-roar and CONgress want to hold summary executions of CEO's just to save their own re-elections? How do companies withdraw from the whole U.S.A. markets? It's a stampede!!!

"So he endorses this to keep the Left from defecting to the Green Party."

There's more to it than that... Even lifelong Repellicans who are swayed with the dream of stopping all growth and not only preserving everything but also restoring everything to 1925 population levels and conditions in CA will support him on GANG-GREEN type moves like this one.

Native Californians also will never stop "California Dreamin!" Some of the most otherwise conservative people suck into this crap everytime it's tried here! It's retro-thinking to the maximum, but it's out there, just beneath the surface.

Two days before the bill emerged from the Legislature, Burton wrote language into the bill specifically barring fees on SUVs, new gasoline charges or mileage penalties.

One of two things. Either this bill is useless and cannot change anything, or it's a Trojan Horse giving more power to the unelected CARB to legislate what the Legislature can't or won't pass into law.

If it's the first, why the big flurry to pass it? What good does it do? (I know, it "solidifies" the Greens to Davis). But if it's the latter, then someone is hiding the true impact of this bill.

I wonder if you can buy an SUV in Arizona (or some other border state), drive it for abuot 100 miles and then sell it in California as a used vehicle, thus dodging the $3500 fee? If so, I'm starting truck dealerships in Ehrenburg and Yuma.

>>Burton and Assembly Democratic leaders bottled the bill up in the Legislature and delayed sending it to the governor, who has 12 days to sign the bill after he receives it. By delaying the bill, supporters hoped to reduce the amount of time that auto dealers and other opponents would have to mount legal challenges, such as a signature-gathering drive for a referendum on the November ballot.<<

This angers me greatly and proves that our Constitution is dead. The legislature has taken it upon itself to do something that would prevent the people from exercising their rights as participants in our supposedly free government.I do wonder why something couldn't come up through the referendum process anyways though. I think I voted in Cali once- a mayoral race in San Francisco.

Forget that they are supposed to be representatives of the people. They aren't representing anything but their own socialist agendas.

Too bad there aren't enough Californians that will remember this when it come time to vote. Too bad there wont be a "Sacramento Gasoline Party" to protest this form of taxation without representation. Actually I guess gasoline would be dangerous but I'm sure a creative substitute could be found to represent it.

California has a dictatorship running over there.

This 2002 election is going to be a real knockdown at the end. I can hardly wait.

Unfortunatly, this election won't even be close. Simon will lose by at least 7 points come election day. By playing to the left, Davis is making a smart move. Simon's only chance is to energize the right-wing base, which he seems interested in alienating.

Not all, although I sure would like to return to the era that I grew up in. As a 5th generation So. Californian and my wife a 6th generation So. Californian we are waiting for the petitions to carry and sign for a referendum on this piece of garbage legislation.

Yep. In the 2 polls released last week, the one showing Davis loosing INCLUDED the green party candidate. The one showing him leading did not.

He's going after the Green votes.

CHill out dude. I voted for Simon in March and I shilled for him by attacking Dick "Head" Riordan. My newspaper carried the water for the Los Angeles Republican party for a year and a half. I've been involved in Republican party politics since 1980 so stop slandering me by saying I'm with DU.

If all you can do is stoop to calling names than you're in for a rough ride here. I'm just calling like I see it with Simons campaign. They are running a horrible campaign and they will most likely lose.

Just the view from someone who's been involved in Republican campaigns for 22 years.

Somehow I knew you wouldn't be a "conflicted conservative!" I've admired you ever since you threatened to quit your Brokerage Firm when they proposed to have the bent one come and speak at their big meeting.

I understand the nostalgia that native Californians have of the miles of orange groves and seeing the mountains clearly in the distance almost everyday. They move up here in droves and tell me all about it.

Now that they moved here and find some semblance of the nightmare they left behind begin to grow even a little, or perceive any possible "growth inducing" possibilities, they attack the agricultural land owner for selling out to developers and chant in government meetings to make the land owner stay in unprofitable uses of his/her land... forever!!!

Yes, even Orange County Ex-Urban refugees who were Bob Dornan conservatives... Even Liberterians circulate petitions to our local government to force the ag landowner to never be able to further sub-divide.

The pear blight took out the pear orchards in the 1970's and now the grower can't grow houses or anything else because the kids won't stay with a dying enterprise. Who can blame them?

But do the conflicted conservatives care that they are forcing democratic/socialistic, even facistic government forces to destroy the landowner's investment backed expectations? No!

They get all indignant at anyone who attempts to support "the good ole boys" property rights and procede to mob them and intimidate local electeds into forfeiting everything the old man and woman dreamed of all their lives for their children.

And some even have the gaul to rave about how this is more democratic and the American way! Remember, I'm talking conservative Repubs and Libertarians here... self described when asked!!!

So everybody is "conservative" until it gets down to their own back yard, or the level of traffic on their commute to work for the government in the State Crapitol.

So principles be damned! If it threatens to cause one any discomfort what-so-ever... just get the hell outta the way of the mob I'ma gonna raise to impose my will all over yer body, buddy!!! We're gonna stop that urban sprawl at all costs. If jobs leave the State because Dirty Gray Davis signs that stupid law, all the better because they're "Growth Inducing!" (/saurcasm)(/rant)

They are running a horrible campaign and they will most likely lose.

Two words explain it all: Karl Rove.

Russo knows who signs the checks.
