A discussion about protests by an anti-homosexual church at the funerals of fallen American soldiers turned into an astounding shoutfest on national television this weekend, with Fox News host Julie Banderas calling a fire-and-brimstone Christian preacher "the devil" and apparently condemning her to hell.

"You are the devil!" Banderas exclaimed to Shirley Phelps-Roper. "If you believe in the Bible, miss, you're going to hell!" Phelps-Roper: "You're proud. You're proud of your sins. You can't do enough sinning. You think 'gay' pride, bimbo. You have sinned away your day of grace."

Banderas: "OK, you are an abomination."

Phelps-Roper: "America is doomed. America is doomed. ... Before your eyes, missy, you're gonna see the destruction of America."

I'd like to be the microscope in their lives which are clearly full of seething hatred

Oh I am sure if there was a little investigation done into the their lives you could see the developing hatred, bitterness and unforgiveness.

Yeah, they're definitely a few fries short of a happy meal.

I don't think they know the meaning of *happy*. Taking pleasure in other people's misery and intentionally inflicting more pain on them is not a sign of a happy person. Some day someone is going to crack and do those people in and they'll have it coming.

"This may very well be true, but it in no way sanctions the behavior of these people. It only leaves one to believe that they are not Christians either. "

And who can rightly judge whether we have or not? Not you or I thats for sure.

"I'd like to be the microscope in their lives which are clearly full of seething hatred. If they can show us where in the Scriptures such things are condoned by Christ, it'd be very interesting."

They can't.

I thought she did pretty well myself. Each person has a different level of maturity in their walk with God.

And I'll contribute lots of money to the legal defense fund of whoever does it.

Based on the outward, they're not. Just as with Jimmy Carter who also said he was/is a Christian. When there is such insurmountable evidence that people haven't the remotest foundational understanding of what they say their core belief is, then it's an enormous clue.

But otherwise, you are correct, we do not have the insight into their hearts as such.

In this case, I'm going to have to disagree.

In John 14-17 Jesus is pretty clear what constitutes a disciple of His. There are other places where it's stated that by their fruits you shall know them.

While a lot of people claim to be Christian and have some idosyncirsies that I disagree with, I'd say that in this case they are clearly not Christian. Their behavior is no way representative of what Christ taught. Speaking out against evil is one thing, this kind of seething hatred is another.

Its not so much as that, IMO we dont have insight into God. People like to naysay and condemn but I beleive in a loving God and there are many many good people in this country today.

When we get to the same point as the Dutch then I will worry.

There's nothing wrong with Phred Felps that a month-long ass-kicking wouldn't cure.

1) Love your neighbor as your self. (but who is my neighbor?)

2) Don't bother judging whether someone is going to hell. It isn't your business. In everything else, judge away!

IMO.

There is plenty to criticize in this anything-goes society. But laying homosexual acting out at the doorstep of the US military, especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, is a leap that I've never understood. Granted they're forced to (barely) tolerate it, but the military is the best example we have of a group that is NOT pushed around by the militant homosexuals.

I generally discount statements by people that go "That's not christian" or "How very christian of you" because it's usually someone who hates our religion trying to use it against us. My usual reply is something along the lines of being Christian doesn't mean being nice all the time and a doormat.

On this same subject, I received a automated phone message over the weekend that simply said to call Mr. Phelps and it gave a 800 number.

Looks like he is trying to find more supporters.

I deleted the cal.

you're right, the turn your cheek is always put out there but few people realize the apostles carried swords. Hence the ear cutting off in the garden.

I do my best to worry about myself and not others. That keeps me plenty busy. I don't care if the fox lady (or is it foxy) didn't quote the bible 100% verbatim to the King James Version. I thought she presented a positive image in contrast to a very negative christian image.

The message of Jesus was grace. Grace for our sins above all else but also grace for our other mistakes. Its what counts in the heart that matters to him and not the ability to quote 126 verses of the KJV. The quotes will come in time but when we critisize people in instances like that we are not presenting the image of grace.

But what good will a lawsuit do?

It will do quite a bit of good, if the judge has a brain in his head and includes an open-ended garnishment in the ruling -- that will cut off any future income from Phelps' scam of filing frivolous lawsuits.

Shirley Phelps-Roper first appeared, that I know of, as a protester during the funeral of Matthew Shepard, the man who was beaten and hung on a fence to die in Wyoming.

People mag or Life mag wrote about her and I was so angered by her hate filled rhetoric that I wrote the magazine. Phelps-Roper said she was a lawyer and she had 9 kids at home and all of the kids believed in "the word of God" against gays. The letter I wrote said that her opinions validated MY opinion: That the world is full of educated idiots lacking both common sense and compassion and it was absolutely nauseating to think that there were nine more like her, back home!

Someone should invent an antibiotic for a woman this nasty......................yeeeeeeeshhhhhhh!

Oh I agree with you 100%. What makes people like her and her cult dangerous.... is that some of what they say is right on target. So a person hears a few words that "make sense"..... and listen past the psycho parts.

Protesting at a funeral is reprehensible beyond words.

I'm not sure I've ever seen an exchange like that one on television before.
