Most high school students are sick of having to go through the same old sex-ed class every year. The complaints regarding the class range from "It's so boring!" to "I know this stuff already." However, I don't believe any student was prepared for the arrival of a new club that promoted a semi-new idea of distributing various forms of birth control to the student population.
Neither was I.
You see, in my southern California high school, a new club, called LSOY (which stands for "Latex Saves Our Youth") has taken a stand against teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Their actions? Distribute condoms to students during lunch, which is an obviously more "liberal" (quoted from an article in the student newspaper regarding LSOY) approach to the problem. Their reasoning? Teens are going to have sex anyway, so why not spread the idea of safe sex and protection. Apparently, abstinence is a much too old fashioned concept for the founder's liking.
The club's first act was to hand out pamphlets and condoms during lunch on Valentine's Day. I was rather offended when a LSOY representative handed me a condom and said, "Good luck tonight!" Being a freshman, I vaguely wondered if this was some sort of joke. And when the article came out in the school newspaper, I realized that it was just one big, sick joke.
Besides the fact that it's just plain strange for a fellow student to hand you a contraceptive, it implies that teens either don't care or aren't intelligent enough to not have sex in the first place, or, if they decide to have sex, at least use their own protection. We might was well be a bunch of zoo animals. Or, perhaps we just don't have the self control to not throw ourselves into bed. Either way, the concept of handing out contraceptives in schools gives teenagers a bad name.
If a school was teaching students about the dangers of smoking, would the teachers had out cigarettes after the lesson? Of course not. The reasoning behind such actions would be too rediculous to comprehend. So why would we possibly want to teach students about abstinence and then hand them condoms? The distribution of contraceptives actually promotes teen sex. Wow. Brilliant conclusion on my part, don't you think?
I would love to ban LSOY, but I don't think that the rest of the mainly liberal student population would back me up. Any suggestions for a logical course of action would be greatly appreciated.
Geez. I always felt lucky if I got an extra chocolate covered peanut butter ball dessert.
Does your school board approve?.....Your principal?
If sex ed is a mandate, how much can they get away with.
Are you willing to be a leader in changing this direction?
Would you have any support.....This could be a real challenge....Southern California.
How much does this truly offend you?
Well said. It reminds me of events about a decade ago when there was a group of HS students in Marin County (home of Johnny Jihad) who were protesting in order to make condoms available upon request from the school clinic. The few (but media-savvy) students organized the mini-rally in May, just before the prom and graduation. No from the press or TV thought to ask, "What about during summer vacation? If you're going to have a hot date in the middle of August, and don't have the school nurse to give you your rubbers, are you going to go without sex, or just without 'protection?'"
You're a high school freshman? You're a great writer for your age.
But this young man will need a strong resolve if he hopes to effect change.
First, dp, find out all the facts.....be well armed with facts.
Several years ago, sex ed was mandated in our county.....quietly, before parents, students got wind of it.
Dissemination of the curriculum all across the county.......Stacks of curriculum, printed out, and hand carried from one end of the county to the other by parents, students, clergy working together.......helped turn the tide in the other direction.
Lots of hard work, phone calls, and home gatherings where parents/students could look at the curriculum helped gather steam to effect change against this mandate.
We ended up with sex ed....(that part we couldn't stop!).......but decidedly an Abstinence Only version.
Abortion, condoms etc. could only be discussed as a failed approach.
If you really feel strongly about this, and aren't afraid of trying......go for it!
And God bless!
I really hope you will follow up on this!!....and you write very well :)
How so?
