Should The UN Be Held Responsible For Terrorism In Its Jenin Camp?
Toogood Reports ^ | May 1, 2002 | Mary Mostert

The Jenin Refugee Camp, which is the subject of an "Investigation" effort by the United Nations has been a project of the United Nations for the past 52 years. In effect, it is a totally owned subsidiary of the United Nations. The United Nations pays the bills and the United Nations is the employer of those who run the Refugee Camp.

So, the question is, now that there is a big controversy over the make-up of the UN "fact-finding commission" to Jenin, exactly how and why did the United Nations operate a camp that became the center of terror against Israeli civilians? And, since the camp basically belongs to the United Nations, why would the world expect the United Nations to ever tell the truth about what really was going on in Jenin?

Jerusalem Post columnist Shlomo Avineri observed, "All refugee camp officials – from directors of the camps, through the camp bureaucracy and down to teachers in the schools – are UN employees. Most of them are Palestinians. Is it possible for a camp like Jenin to become a center for terrorists and suicide bombers without the knowledge, connivance or even active participation of the UN-employed camp bureaucracy – Palestinians or expatriates?" Avineri also points to the UN´s support of terrorists in places like Bosnia and Kosovo, where KLA terrorism against Serbs, Jews, Gypsies and other ethnic groups and the (destruction of Christian churches has been rampant. http://www.decani.yunet.com/destruction.html)

At issue in the Israeli cabinet´s refusal to allow the UN "investigating committee" access to Jenin is the make-up of the investigators. Israel wanted a team that understood a military battle. What the UN has appointed is basically a group of social workers – a former Finnish president, a former U.N. high commissioner for refugees and a former head of the international committee of the Red Cross. None of them are qualified to assess a military operation, and at least one of whom is openly hostile to Israel.

Israel named Mary Robinson, High Commissioner for Human Rights, by name as a person they would not accept for the fact-finding committee. She said in a speech this week, "We should all be able to agree, surely, that the prevention of gross violations of human rights must be the starting point of the human rights agenda of the future. This crucial challenge should be central to our process of reflection."

I have searched her speeches in the UN website. I can´t find a single one that lists suicide bombers who have wantonly killed approximately 300 people in Israel as an example of a human rights abuse. And, it isn´t as if we only have the mean Jews telling us about what occurred in Jenin. Egypt´s Al -Ahram Weekly published an interview with Omar, one of the Jenin terrorist leaders about the operation. He said, "The fighters (terrorists) hoped to disable the Israeli army's tanks with much more powerful bombs placed inside rubbish bins on the street. More explosives were hidden inside the cars of Jenin's most wanted men."

Connected by wires, the bombs were set off remotely, triggered by the current from a car battery.

According to Omar, everyone in the camp, including the children, knew where the explosives were located so that there was no danger of civilians being injured. It was the one weakness in the plan.

"We were betrayed by the spies among us," he says. The wires to more than a third of the bombs were cut by soldiers accompanied by collaborators. "If it hadn't been for the spies, the soldiers would never have been able to enter the camp. Once they penetrated the camp, it was much harder to defend."

Based on that published report, two-thirds of those bombs apparently were detonated, either by the terrorists or later by the Israeli army. Undoubtedly, those bombs caused a huge amount of property damage. Was that the fault of the Israelis, who were not allowing anyone to move around until they found and detonated the bombs, or was that the fault of the terrorists or was that the fault of the United Nations which allowed terrorists to create such a sophisticated terrorist infrastructure in a UN controlled and financed "refugee camp?"

According to Ali Zafouri, one of the Jenin terrorists captured by the IDF, over 500 hand explosive charges and about 10 larger ones were made and set "throughout the camp.

Zafouri admitted that one Hamas "operative" from Jenine was "mistaken for an Israeli soldier, shot and killed when he entered a house in the camp wearing a military helmet." After the fighting stopped and the curfew was lifted, an Arab-Israeli doctor was injured when he accidentally set off a cache of weapons placed in a booby-trapped house by the terrorists to lure IDF forces inside and explode them. After the Doctor was injured, the Palestinians started spreading rumors that he was injured from land mines placed by the IDF before pulling out.

During the siege, the United Nations showed itself totally incapable of understanding the nature of what was occurring in Jenin in an article on its website in which UNICEF was critical of the 800 "women and children (who) were forced out on the streets of Jenin," by the Israeli army, "where they have no protection, food or clothing." Was that statement based on sheer ignorance or was the United Nations trying to help the Palestinians? Why would a humanitarian organization object to women and children being removed from houses that had been booby trapped with bombs?

And, just how were all those bombs and weapons financed, who financed them and how did they get into Jenin? Could it be that some of the UN approved "aid" coming from other Arab nations into Jenin included explosives?

I sort of doubt we´ll ever know unless there is ANOTHER investigation, not composed of UN operatives, to find out the answers to those questions.

Go get 'em, George. "You are either for or against the war on terrorism". Now that the UN is supporting terrorism, the need to carry on the war on terrorism needs to be expanded.
