The California Public Employees Pension System steered $700 million in investment capital to a wealthy financier who has donated more than $600,000 to Gov. Gray Davis and thousands more to officials who serve on the CalPERS board, according to state records.

This is why the 7 million government workers who are not in Social Security but have 100% private plans should be forced into Social Security (or better yet, let everyone have a private plan they control).

If we don't stop this, government unions will own the Fortune 100 someday. That is the definition of economic fascism.

Burkle is a self-made billionaire who rose from grocery store clerk to owner of the Ralph's/Food 4 Less chain. Today he lives in Greenacres, a Beverly Hills estate once owned by silent film star Harold Lloyd, and is CEO of the Yucaipa Companies investment concern.

Burkle is a longtime Democratic activist, and since 1998 he has donated $1. 9 million to Democratic candidates and causes in California, state records show. Davis is his single biggest beneficiary.

It's also a reason why Bush's plan to privatize social security may be a bad idea. It might do better for the individual beneficiary, but do we really want the government buying up the whole stock market?

I couldn't find a picture, but I did find this:

L.A. investment firm hires Clinton as adviser (AP, from CNN.com, 4/11/2002)

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Bill Clinton will serve as a senior adviser to a pair of investment funds headed by a former grocery store magnate who is a friend of the former president.

Some of Clinton's new duties as counsel to the Yucaipa American Fund and the Yucaipa Corporate Initiatives Fund will include meeting with political leaders and company heads in communities where the funds hope to invest. The funds specialize in lower-income urban and rural communities.

"We are proud that President Clinton will serve as a senior advisor to our firm," said Ron Burkle, managing partner of The Yucaipa Companies. "Much of what we have accomplished and continue to pursue in our investment strategy matches the platform the president outlined while in office with his New Markets Initiative."

Clinton's staff confirmed the appointment in a statement released Wednesday.

Burkle would not disclose how much Clinton would be compensated for his services but said his pay would be based on the performance of the funds.

Burkle made his fortune in the grocery store business after starting out doing odd jobs at a supermarket when he was 5 and later moving on to bagging groceries. He sold Fred Meyer to Kroger for about $8 billion in 1999.

Burkle and his company also have contributed more than $1 million to the Democrat and Republican parties in the last four years.

Based in Los Angeles, Yucaipa was created in 1986 and has brokered 21 investment transactions worth more than $14 billion.

Clinton has spent most of his time since he left the White House writing his memoirs and speaking on the lecture circuit.

If we move to a privatized system, Democrats are dead set on trying to put the government in control of the money. The GOP and Bush are equally as dead set against anything but private accounts.

Ron Burkle alert. As you may know, he wasn't involved in politics much at all until he paid Ron Brown to be on a Commerce Department trip to South Africa (1993?). After that, he become one of Clinton's and the DNC's biggest fundraisers. Burkle did the Lincoln bedroom thing and also had Clinton to his house for overnights.

Ernest, thanks, this has been my warning to all since the early dark days of the power blackout days re the Fascist reality of Herr Davis.

It was very obvious that Davis had made the step from your petty socialist Rat politician to the very dangerous Fascist. It was clear that to do business in Kali, you had to do one of two things:

1. Donate large sums of money to Davis to buy business like the Whoreacle scandal has shown us.

2. Even more dangerous, if you are wealthy you donate vast sums to Davis. Then, your businesses, like Burkle's, become the facist approved business. Then, Davis uses his power to get Cal Pers and the state to invest in your business. Then via legislation or back door deals make your business the Rat Poster Boy Business in your area of speciality/expertise. This is just plain old Fascism!

Then, your favorite Fascist company puts the wife of the Fascist Governor on your board for some incredible benefits. The CEO donates $600,000 to insure present and future businesses. Then, the Fascists in Charge, makes sure that no one can compete with you on an equal basis in California. Those threatening comments by Lockyer to power providers, were nothing but vile brown shirted fascist bully threats to any power company trying to do business in Kali. If those companies had given Davis and Lockyer, what they wanted, the companines would never had a problem.

Larry Lied nailed this troubling reality with his reply that included this remark:

If we don't stop this, government unions will own the Fortune 100 someday. That is the definition of economic fascism.

Right on Larry! Benito Davis has been hard at work as the prototype Fascist Poster Boy Governor with his criminal fascist AG, Lockyer, who will lock you up if you don't fall in line and donate big time to him, the Gov and the rats in power in Kaliland.

This confirms what we suspected (well, what we knew). It is a huge story. Trying to remember the freepers around when we were checking out the Ron Brown story and Burkle.

My guess is one reason Burkle went with Democrats was to solve labor problems. In the early 90s, I was in Vegas when Food $ Less employees were picketing because they wanted a union and he hired scabs. Mob guys like Vic Kamber,Sweeney Coia and Ickes were hanging around Vegas at that time.

I wasn't here on FR at that time. I missed that part.

I do know that Burkle is a very shady and to me a very scary guy. I know that Liz and I became aware of him this past spring due to the other connections.

99.9% of Americans have zero knowledge of what Fascism really is.

None of this matters unless two things happen.

First, this information must reach Democratic voters and effect their decisions. Publication in a major Democratic rag in a Democratic stronghold helps but effecting the small number of swing voters in the bay area will make a difference in this consistantly 80%+ Democratic area.

Second Simon must continue to pound on these revelations and convince the swing voters that this behavior is much more than "business as usual/they all do it" in the eyes of the voters. If Simon's present nightly news exposure is any indication he won't be able to get his point across.

It seems the little San Diego Union Tribune scooped the Chronicle on this one, although both published on a Sunday, in typical clintonian fashion.

[California] State pension fund investments linked to campaign gifts

For almost a year now, many of us have wondered why Calpine seemed to have a free pass on all criticism from the Davis administration, although they were in there "gouging" with the rest of them. My theory all along has been that CALPERS was invested heavily in Calpine stock. Time will tell...
