A "guns are icky" bump.

great observations and what about this obvious one? What percentage of airline pilots HAVE NOT HAD prior military experience (i.e. Navy Air, AF, etc...) in other words THEY ALREADY ARE TRAINED, KOOKIE!!! It's intelligence, STUPID

The Sky Marshals are only a last line of defense. The brunt of aircraft security responsibility will be borne by the new
Federal
Air
Transportation
Airport
Security
Service.
And if the sight of Federal agents wearing black jackets emblazoned with the agency logo "FATASS" doesn't make you feel safer about flying, you're beyond help.

Pukie Roberts and her husband Steve are typical left wing media pundits, no surprises here.

I do believe that Cokie missed her true calling, it had something to do with knee pads.

'ABCs Cokie Roberts revealed herself as a staggering tower of intellect when proclaiming how frightened she would be if a pilot with a gun started running around the cabin shooting at her and other passengers.' I can just imagine hearing Cokie's response if that happened....."Oh, great! Now we'll be up here all day!.....

The difference between an sky marshall and a pilot is that the marshall is 'THE AUTHORITIES' while the pilot is not.
The cowing of America is the process whereby perfectly good citizens are willingly turning themselves into 'subjects' and are almost demanding that they suffer and are being dimihished and humiliated at the hands of the various 'authorities'. Please note that the 'gun control' whackos don't oppose guns per se, they are only against guns in the hands of free citizens. They would be quite confortable with 'the authorities' riding tanks on their streets. It's their neighbors' guns that offend them.

This Week with the Aviation Week editor looks at the pilot in a slightly different light. A gun isn't necessary to discommode a highjacker, (pun intended). A "gentle" 1G dive and then climb will launch the "bad guy" into a "Vomit Comet" tizzy. Since abrupt maneuvers in yaw and roll could cause "pieces" to fall of the aircraft, we just have to hope that the bad guy isn't an astronaut!
Personally, I'd rather that the airliners modify the throttles. A disconnect microswitch would allow the the autopilot to take control of the engine settings. The handle and tubes that make up the throttles would disconnect. The tubes would be GUN BARRELS and the pilot would turn and blow the hijackers face off!
Roll a bunch of these cowboys off flights on a covered gurney and hold a press conference where the results of the attempt could be shown off. Pretty soon there will be nobody entering cockpits or attempting hijacking.

Obviously, Cokie would prefer that only a Sky Marshall be armed, because he would be "fully trained."I suppose Cokie babes would prefer a "fully trained" marshal like Barbara Boxer or Dianne Fineswine?
They have been sworn in as U.S. Marshalls, you know, so THEY can carry firearms without any of the hassles they subject the rest of us "little people" to.

Rio Linda, CA, just west of SAC. Small tracts of land with what looks like squatter's shacks on them. Lots of horses, goats and chickens. Definately not upscale CA living.

I would feel more secure if, as the author seems to wish, my security was not dependent on the gun of the guy who is supposed to be inside the cockpit, flying the plane.
I'd rather have a couple of armed sky marshalls on EVERY flight...not just selected ones...we DID "federalize" airport security, did we not??? WELL, baggage handlers aren't exactly the government's forte...but WELL TRAINED, WELL ARMED SOLDIERS ARE.
Keep the cockpit secure, by leaving the pilot to do his job and transport passengers as safely as possible. DO NOT insist that the pilots have to open the damned cocpit door!! It was bad enough oyu people INSISTED od FEDERALIZING airport security in the first place!!!

Guns scare me, so you can't have one.

Most of these pilots are trained by the military. They've already had training in firearms. Where has Cokie been?

You have to remember that Cokie's daddy was one of the most "Liberal" Southern Congressmen in the middle years of the last Century. In many respects he was a pioneer of the turncoat variety that has since produced Bill Clinton. Indeed, some people thought that Hale Boggs might be up to more than just Leftwing Democratic politics, but I don't think that that was ever proven.
But Cokie probably grew up with the value system--and "analytic" abilities--that it has taken another generation of NEA propaganda to instill in most American kids.

I heard the same thing from my liberal Dutch friend. She said she would be very frightened to know that the pilot had a gun on the plane. I tried to get more out of her but apparently the mere thought of a gun scared her so much she changed the subject. She wants unarmed Sky Marshalls.
