Brother Kenneth Hoagland, principal of the Uniondale school, says the challenge to the songs only brought to a head almost three years of conflict with the family who "did not accept the school's notion of Christianity."

Jesus Christ Superstar? Is that the school's notion of Christianity? Some Catholic school that is.

The Vatican endorses Jesus Christ Superstar, so the medley was perfectly appropriate for a Catholic school.

If this were a public school I'd be upset. But this is a private institution with its own rules that students and their parents choose to attend.

Whether I disagree with their views or not, they were totally within their rights to ask the girl to leave. Sounds like the family were the type who always were complaining about something.

"Jesus Christ Superstar" is a celebration of the life of Jesus, What's the problem with it?

Hoo-ray for Megan.

Parents should keep their eyes on Brother Kenneth their boys as far away from this creep as possible.

A private sector school making a decision as to what the students are required to do??? How insane!

One thing does need to be mentioned. This apparently is a PRIVATE school. As such, her case is much less airtight than this article makes out. The private schools do have rights to pick and choose students, and, should the situation arise, ask them to leave the school.

Sorry - this is a private, Catholic school. If she (and by extension her family) did not want to participate in the things that are incumbent upon other students and families in the school, then they need to find another school more in tune with what they want/believe or, barring that, go to public school.

I have no problem with her exercising her rights, but she doesn't have the additional right to tell them what they can/cannot do within those bounds.

Her dad wants to see her graduate from there? He should have thought about that before he decided to try to impose his religion on the Catholic school.

I don't think Superstar is any more anyone's idea of Christianity than Godspell is. Unless you are looking directly at the Bible, you are likely to have some issues with the theology of the book, play, painting, whatever.

IMHO there is nothing blasphemous in Superstar although there are some ideas that I disagree with. I find it an excellent vehicle, however, for sparking thought and some enjoyable 60s rock & roll.

Shalom.

Who are you
To criticize her?
Who are you
To despise her?
Leave her, leave her
Let her be now
Leave her, leave her
She's with me now
If your slate is clean
Then you can throw stones
If your slate is not
Then leave her alone!

I'm amazed that men like you
Can be so shallow, thick, and slow
There is not a man among you
Who knows or cares if I come or go

There is nothing wrong with "Jesus Christ Superstar". I reminds of the days where Broadway and the arts would be open to works done around Christianity and religion. Nowadays we get "The Vagina Monologues".

But Gaffey, a member of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Franklin Square, said the medley was offensive.

Bump. I don't know what the medley is, but the entire musical/"opera" is offensive to any real Christian.

It sounds to me like 98 per cent of the students are not Christians--which certainly would explain the "almost three years of conflict with the family who 'did not accept the school's notion of Christianity.'"

I think there is more to this story than what is being told here. Based on comments I've read and heard over the last two days, it seems this was the final straw in a long list of things that got this girl kicked out of school.

"Megan Gaffey says she and her family consider the songs blasphemous."

Good for her. She's right, the whole d@mn musical is blasphemous. If somebody wnats to hear it its their business, but ti shouldn't be forced on anybody.

The last time I checked, the Catholic Church was supposed to be a Christian religion. Where do these Marists get off with this anti-Christian blasphemy? Are Marists connected in any way with those left-wing commie wackos the Mary Knolls? If they are, that eplains everything.

if the girl doesn't want to sing the song, why do they have to kick her OUT of the school? ... the school requires conformity to every jot and tittle of their law? ... I suppose next they'll be doing "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and then boot somebody for not screaming "where's your neck?" ... (I have only seen TRHPS once ... that was enough for me but those who have seen it will catch the reference)

The Orthodox Presbyterian Church is VERY VERY conservative. Calvinist, staunchly Reformed....I don't know how they handled going to a Catholic school.

SATAN seems to be working overtime in our school systems in America; he is obviously paying his union dues.
