Psalm 83
Prayer to Frustrate Conspiracy Against Israel
A Song. A Psalm of Asaph.
1 Do not keep silent, O God!
Do not hold Your peace,
And do not be still, O God!
2For behold, Your enemies make a tumult;
And those who hate You have lifted up their head.
3They have taken crafty counsel against Your people,
And consulted together against Your sheltered ones.
4They have said, "Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation,
That the name of Israel may be remembered no more."
5For they have consulted together with one consent;
They form a confederacy against You:
6The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites;
Moab and the Hagrites;
7Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek;
Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;
8Assyria also has joined with them;
They have helped the children of Lot.Selah
9Deal with them as with Midian,
As with Sisera,
As with Jabin at the Brook Kishon,
10Who perished at En Dor,
Who became as refuse on the earth.
11Make their nobles like Oreb and like Zeeb,
Yes, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,
12Who said, "Let us take for ourselves
The pastures of God for a possession."
13O my God, make them like the whirling dust,
Like the chaff before the wind!
14As the fire burns the woods,
And as the flame sets the mountains on fire,
15So pursue them with Your tempest,
And frighten them with Your storm.
16Fill their faces with shame,
That they may seek Your name, O LORD.
17Let them be confounded and dismayed forever;
Yes, let them be put to shame and perish,
18That they may know that You, whose name alone is the LORD,
Are the Most High over all the earth.

Are you saying that the Church has replaced Israel? That the Church has taken Israel's place in the covenants that He established with Israel? That God has no further use for the nation Israel? Replaced? No. A continuation of? Absolutely. The church was grafted into the trunk of the tree. And yes, Galatians makes it clear that as Christians, we are children of Abraham and heirs of the promises.

Mt 21:43 - Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing the fruits of it." And indeed it was taken away from them and given to the gentiles. And the new holy temple is being built with living stones on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ himself as the chief conerstone. (Ephesians 2:19-22)
It was God's purpose all along to make one body out of the two. (Jew & Gentile) "His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace... Ephesians 2:15 NIV. This was the mystery to which Paul alluded to . "This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 3:6 NIV
Sounds to me like He is finished with national Israel and is married to His Bride - the Church. If someone has a problem with that, take it up with Him.

For all people in danger or suffering, for those who are weary and frightened, for an end to terrorism.....
and for our Orthodox brothers and sisters across the world, and for peace,
Lord, we beg for your mercy.
Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy.

A continuation of? Absolutely.
Hmm.
The church was grafted into the trunk of the tree.
I dont think anyone would argue with that.
And yes, Galatians makes it clear that as Christians, we are children of Abraham and heirs of the promises.
God promised Abraham a seed, a land, a blessing, and that the earth would be blessed through his family. Do all those now apply to the Church, and not to the modern state of Israel?
Thank you for your thoughts.

Hebrews 12:18 For you have not come to what may be touched, a blazing fire, and darkness, and gloom, and a tempest, 19 and the sound of a trumpet, and a voice whose words made the hearers entreat that no further messages be spoken to them. 20 For they could not endure the order that was given, "If even a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned." 21 Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, "I tremble with fear." 22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, 23 and to the assembly of the first-born who are enrolled in heaven, and to a judge who is God of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks more graciously than the blood of Abel.
Re 21:2 - Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
2Co 11:2 I feel a divine jealousy for you, for I betrothed you to Christ to present you as a pure bride to her one husband.
Eph 5:23 - For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior

I disagree that the Jew has no special standing. We must remember the sign that was posted over the head of the crucified Jesus. He whom the Jews think of as a pretender, is is fact king of the Jews.

Isa 43:26 - Put me in remembrance, let us argue together; set forth your case, that you may be proved right.
Good grief, must we turn a simple prayer into an argument?

God promised Abraham a seed, a land, a blessing, and that the earth would be blessed through his family. Do all those now apply to the Church, and not to the modern state of Israel? 1. As to Abraham's seed. - Galatians 3:16-29 adequately deals with that subject. Jesus Christ is the promised seed. Those who have faith and belong to Him are Abraham's seed and heirs according to the promise. (and note that there is no distinction between Jew or Greek in the church)
2. As to the land - Joshua 21:43-45 tells us that the promised was fulfilled in every detail. Now, if Israel forfeits their right to the land through disobedience, that's another story. But Scripture is clear that the land promise was fulfilled. Hence, no need to be fulfilled again and again.
3. As to the blessing that the whole earth would be blessed through his family - The whole New Testament deals with the fulfillment of this promise. Remember the Lord's admonition to his disciples to go into the whole earth with the gospel. Remember Paul's words in Colossians 1:6 (whether hyperbole or not) that all over the world the gospel was producing fruit. The preaching of the gospel brings God's elect into His church - His body - His bride. Wow, that was an easy one.
4. As to applying to the church and not natural Israel - One simple word: Yes!!
To: israelite98
22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, Amen! And Paul makes a good case that the present physical city of Jerusalem is Hagar and stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia because she is in slavery with her children. But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother. (see Galatians 4:21-31).
Praise God! We are the true Israel of God. We are the children not of the slave woman but of the free woman.

Yes, but we have to be careful to identify who are in Abrahams family. Remember, Abraham was not a Jew. Nor were Isaac nor Jacob. Nor were any of Jacobs sons. Not for another thousand years were there any "Jews".

Let me guess. The Jews in Israel aren't really Jews, right?
To: RobbyS
whom the Jews think of as a pretender"The Jews" didn't. That was a Jews hanging on that cross. And his mother, a Jew, was there at the Cross. And He sent his Disciples, Jews, out into the world. Why would His Disciples think he was a pretender?
