DeLay Apologizes for Schiavo Case Rhetoric
AP via Yahoo ^ | April 13, 2005 | Terence Hunt

Posted on 04/13/2005 8:21:32 PM PDT by cyncooper

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay apologized Wednesday for using overheated rhetoric on the day Terri Schiavo died, but refused to say whether he supports impeachment of the judges who ruled in her case.

~snip~

At a crowded news conference in his Capitol office, DeLay addressed remarks he made in the hours after the brain-damaged Florida woman died on March 31. "I said something in an inartful way and I shouldn't have said it that way and I apologize for saying it that way," DeLay told reporters.

~snip~

DeLay seemed at pains to soften, if slightly, his rhetoric of March 31, when Schiavo died despite an extraordinary political and legal effort to save her life.

"I believe in an independent judiciary. I repeat, of course I believe in an independent judiciary," DeLay said.

At the same time, he added, the Constitution gives Congress power to oversee the courts.

"We set up the courts. We can unset the courts. We have the power of the purse," DeLay said.

Asked whether he favors impeachment for any of the judges in the Schiavo case, he did not answer directly.

Instead, he referred reporters to an earlier request he made to the House Judiciary Committee to look into "judicial activism" and Schiavo's case in particular.

For enforcing the Fifth Amendment he swore to uphold? That would be funny if it wasn't so seriously twisted. You've bought into the basic lies about our system that have been propagated by the judicial supremicists.

And you've bought into the basic idiocy that the President has imperial powers to do whatever the hell he feels, that is as long as it agrees with your agenda. News flash for you but the limitations within the Constitution on the President are very specific. I know you may not like to hear that but I suggest you go back and give it a read. As a conservative, I don't want any President to have the ability to pass executive orders that apply to one specific person in a purely domestic issue.

You can't really believe that would have happened, can you? First, he would have to be impeached, by a conservative House of Reprentatives, then convicted by a Republican Senate, then charged with a crime...the crime of overruling a penny-ante GOP RINO judge on an issue of the Constitution of the United States...then convicted by a jury of his peers for the awful act of saving a woman's life. All the pigs on earth would all rise up into the sky simultaneously and soar first.

Ahhh...the good ol' days. Back to the Republicans of old. We're in power. We have no opposition, so by default everything we do must be right and ordered no matter what the limitations actually are, but rather because we yell the loudest and say they are.

I talked to LE on the scene about this exact issue, I know. They laughed at the silly notion that they might ignore such an order. And the family had a medical team standing by the whole time, ready to spring into action

So you were one of those on scene? Interfering with local businesses operating regularly and keeping families from visiting their loved ones in peace? How absolutely 'thoughtful' of you....I'm sure the folks who weren't involved in this circus that missed their loved ones and the nice people of Pinellas Park who were trying to go about their everyday lives and make money for their families appreciate it more than you could ever imagine....and I can't tell you how much that pisses me off. A lot of good folks faced some serious personal hardships so you could get out there with an army of crackpots (i.e. Randall Terry and the like) to voice your opinion on an issue that was none of your business. Frankly though, I'm suprised I didn't see more of Mr. "Nobody will vote for me!!" Keyes out there stirring the pot

BTW, if you need some rebuttal for Justice Scalia's Constitutional position that I posted above, I'm sure you could rustle up something from the 9th Circuit. Now those are activists. Face it, the courts worked as they were supposed to. I think everyone's hearts went out to the grieving family and understood their grief at losing a daughter. But to overturn the Constitution, and in effect give yet another power to the national government, to do so is not something any conservative should advocate

Yeah, yeah, yeah...I heard it all. Tubal feeding isn't life support. Except in Terri's case, there was no brain activity to support, just a body kept alive with liquid nourishment. But you all still continue to live in your dream world that there was hope she would return from her PVS after 15 years, except NO one has ever done this...sigh.

If you all had your way, there would be NO living wills. That's where we are heading with this. And I don't like it!

To do whatever he wants to do...what? You mean like stopping the obvious murder of an innocent handicapped American citizen who was being deprived of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? You mean he didn't have the right to defend THAT most basic of Constitutional rights? Spare me. He had the right. He had the DUTY!

Are you 100% sure that Terri wanted to starve to death? I mean so sure that you would stake your childs life on it?

You're spot on, spectre. I can't believe the same old people are repeating the same lies. It just never ends. From Buckhead to this.

Ah, I see. There's more than one way to be brain dead, as your post proves.

I'm so glad we disagree. I wouldn't want to ever, ever be on the side of murdering anyone for any reason, or finding every which way to justify it. No matter which way you twist this, an innocent woman is dead and there are people on this board backing a murder...and nothing that can be said or any justifications made will make her un-murdered. So rationalize away...I'm sure it makes nights easier.

Beyond - may I suggest you chill a bit?

May I suggest you say more, describe what you mean by that! I am so tired of you three or four women "local cops" getting together to cast aspersions on me and others, calling people "stalkers", or suggesting that we are not fine enough Republicans!

What in the world did I say in post# 503 that was incorrect?

You and your cadre have an attitude that is destroying this website.

Stake my child's life on this?

I wouldn't stake my child's life on anything.

Just last month, they starved my friends Mother to death, in Florida! Yes, they did. She had fallen and hit her head, and it was determined she was brain-dead. BOTH her daughters were married to Doctor's who checked things out thoroughly before they stopped feeding her.

The Mother was 84 and it took 14 days for her to die.

She's in a better place now...

Are you 100% sure that Terri wanted to starve to death? It is a simple yes or no answer.

The facts don't matter, obviously.

FR used to be a place where events were actually researched. Now we're just a dumping ground for every conspiracy theory to come along.

Is that against the rules? Or is it only where someone protests? For example, the example I used above: most everyone here knows mhking's name, and many refer to him that way. Is that against the rules?

Also - with regard to your admonition about personal attacks, some clarification may be helpful. Is calling someone "worse than Nazis" a personal attack?

How about disparaging the character of another FReeper?

Just curious - the application of that particular rule is one I've never quite been able to figure out, and it'd be easier to stay on the right side of the line if it were explained which slurs constitute "personal attacks" and which do not.

A lot of freepers know EV's real name as well as other freeper's real names, so I'm not sure what the rules are anymore either. FR seems to be "ruleless" these days.

I was scared when I saw the title that he was backpedaling, but this looks like a masterful non-apology apology. I like Delay more every day.
