Thanks for posting the link. The charges were dropped in 1869. Prosecutors didn't have a case.

The prosecutors had an excellent case. Charges were dropped, over the objections of the prosecuting attorney and one of the two judges who would have tried Davis, because Chief Justice Chase made it clear that in his view convicting Davis of treason would constitute a violation of his 5th Amendment rights since the 14th Amendment had already levied punishment for his actions in the rebellion, and he would overturn any conviction on those grounds.

If CONGRESS and the Courts didn't prove or call them traitors, what gives YOU that right

All y'all have no problem labeling Sherman a war criminal, in spite of the fact that CONGRESS and the Courts didn't prove or call him one. What give y'all that right?

But instead of allowing it a chance he ordered the bombardment of Sumter and started a war.

That being said, the US Congress and Courts found him NOT GUILTY. The charges were dropped. To carry on as otherwise is petty and even slanderous of the will of our Nation.

Since Davis never came to trial the how could the courts have found him not guilty? And when did Congress weigh in on the matter?

So...now you've appointed yourself judge and jury.
The charges were DROPPED. That means no charges existed effectively. NO TREASON. And though like you, I dislike the OJ case, the man was found NOT GUILTY, by a jury of his peers. You either believe in our system, or you DON'T.

The fact that my ancestor SAW him in action on MY family property.

Different case. Stick to the one at hand.

I'm trying to stick with a single standard rather than a double standard. You should try it.

In the Eastern Theater: The Army of Northern Virginia Battle Flag was Square. (shown is the 4th Bunting Issue)

The Battle Flag of the Army of he penninsula was square.

The Battle Flags of the Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida were square 48", 36" or 30" depending on the classification of the unit.

In the Western Theater, there is way to much variation in Battle Flags. The only one that Looks familiar is the Army of Tennessee after 1863, (previously shown.) Here are three examples to show what I mean:

Trying to shift the discussion to Sherman? Even he said he was guilty!
'I know that in the beginning I, too, had the old West Point notion that pillage was a capital crime, and punished it by shooting.'

- William T. Sherman; a few years later he and president Ulysses Grant would use his war crimes against the south as justification for the ethnic cleansing of American Indians.

When did a court or Congrss say that? That seems to be the criteria around here.

simple really.

billy sherman was a war criminal because he FAILED to stop the depredations of troops under his command.

the ARMY OFFICER's GUIDE states: "An officer in command is RESPONSIBLE for everything done or not done by his command".

that's why.

fyi, i've stopped trying to document ALL the CSPATMW flags.

there are simply TOO MANY of them. SOME platoon-size units had their own battle-flags.

NONE of the battle-flags were EVER official. CSA units made whatever they liked. free dixie,sw

That would make Robert Lee a war criminal too, wouldn't it? Along with Nathan Forrest, your buddy Quantrill, and a whole host of others.

William T. Sherman is one of the finest generals in American history.

Too bad he didn't put the torch to more traitor strongholds.

Absolutely!

The CSA Battle Flag that we all associate with the confederacy is really the Army of Tennesse Battle Flag, (which is also the CSN Jack.)

The square field that was placed on some state flags was a version of the Army of Northern Virginia or the Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

I don't know about Army level battle flags, but I believe that the CSN Ensign and Jack were official.
