Mel Gibson's statement on his DUI arrest
GrandForksHerald.com ^ | 7/29/06

Posted on 07/29/2006 1:51:47 PM PDT by LdSentinal

The following is the complete text of Mel Gibson's statement regarding his arrest for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol:

"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the L.A. County sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person.

"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said.

"Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry.

"I have battled the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."

Saying something sober with intent that wishing someone an eternity of suffering versus saying alleged racist comments when intoxicated can not be compared rationally.

Get real, dude. That assumes that people will say anything stupid when drunk and that they are as apt to tell a cop that they just killed someone or are a terrorist as they are to spout that they hate Jews and that Jews are responsible for war, etc.
Assuming Mel said what he said, drunk or sober, he's a Jew-hater.

Gosh, I haven't heard Mrs. Clinton or Ms. McKinney being bashed at all for THEIR anti semetic remarks. I must've missed that part of the conversation at the time..

Well then you are ____ing deaf.

My point was that although no apology is socially necessary, as demonstrated by those two examples (that rule may only apply to Democrats), he made one ANYWAY, saying that he was ashamed of himself. I can't recall ever hearing a public figure say he was ashamed before. He also didn't use the passive voice ("Mistakes were made") which always negates an apology.

He messed up bad, he knows it, he's sorry and ashamed. I don't think he's only sorry he got caught. Obviously he does have some anti-Semitic feelings, and he appears to be ashamed to have them, as he should be. From what I've read of his father, that seems to be the source. It's hard to root out feelings instilled by your parents - remember the song "You've Got to be Carefully Taught" from "South Pacific?"

I see no reason to apologize for having a few drinks & then driving home.

The erratic driving was observed after he was clocked driving 25 mph over the speed limit.

You might think telling a cop he was going to "f" him is cute. He's lucky he didn't get his face shoved into a wall.

My post concerns his backpedaling and dissemination.

No, your post said that you saw BIIIIGGGG evidence of drug usage. That is much different from talking about backpedaling and dissemination. BTW do you even know what "dissemination" is? it means to distribute information. That is what Rush does as a profession. Perhaps you meant "dissembling?" Please be accurate in what you charge people with doing.

Are you serious? You share half your genes with your father, your father raises you, and you're saying there's no connection? If your father has views like the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, and you're a public figure, it's a perfectly reasonable question, especially when you make a movie like The Passion. Get real, dude...while you don't have to take responsibility for the actions of your father, it is an OK question (that he would not answer). Everything is clearer now.

He may be or may not. I do not know because I am not a mind reader and I have not seen a video or heard audio of the stop myself. Have you?

This is even worse than what the Dixie Chicks did, in my opinion

Agreed....

Who here has not gotten drunk and said or did something he/she should not have?

Well, me. but then I like to drink alone or with my wife, at home. I don't go to parties where drinking is required to have fun, that is, most of them. And I never have more than 2.

But I have done and said things that I should not have, cold-stone sober.

I admit to snickering when I heard he called the female officer "sugar tits" It's almost endearing in an perverse way.

You're right though, he's toast.

I'm bothered that he said his wife won't find salvation, because she remains an Angelican and refuses to convert to his religion.

Maybe they'd pass on me. But since all of my children are of a Jewish mother, they'd take them.

My point is, all of us would do well to take personally the killing of any innocent group of people.

I'd say much higher than the general population........ maybe 15% to 18%.

It would be interesting to know.

But, I know how easy it is to be called an antisemite here when you are not, that's for sure!

Neither is the Holy Trinity.

Both pretty accurately sum up some portions of Bilbical doctrine, however.

I figured something like that. Thank you for the honesty. Your reactions on theis subject are so real and strong, that it seemed obvious that you had been touched by something like that.

Take care..........

I agree with you. I am frequently amazed at the quickness with which judgement is passed on this forum, particularly against those who have been a desperately needed conservative voice against the liberal insanity that our country, and much of the world, is swimming in... Rush, Ann Coulter, Trent Lott, etc. ad nauseum. I can't imagine what life must be like having never made mistakes or bad judgements. And all these years, I believed that Jesus was the only perfect man. < /sarcasm >

And when did it become a conservative value to apologize for every word out of our mouths that doesn't agree with the PC status quo? There are a tremendous number of "conservatives" that only give lip service in support of freedom of speech, but are quick to jump on the condemnation bandwagon when someone utters a word counter to that which they personally approve of.

What is the percentage of Jews in the general pop of the US? I have read that there are about 5-6 million Jews in the US. The number startled, it was so low...

Maybe that's true. But I hope you understand where we are coming from - and when we say NEVER AGAIN..we mean it.

Not defending Mel, here. If he said something antisemitic, he said something antisemitic.

But there was nothing antisemitic about the film, and it did not stir up any antisemitism.

I find Jews who find something antisemitic in the Gospels to be as big a bigots as Christians who do are.
