Update: Multiple Shooting Victims and Possible Hostages in Lancaster County

Not many details available yet, but an incident has been reported from Mine Rd. in Bart Township in Lancaster County involving multiple gunshot victims. Dennis Buterbaugh reports live from our newsroom. abc27 has a news crew on the way. We will update with details as they become available.

Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting

NICKEL MINES, Pa. — At least two female students and one slightly older female — who may have been a teacher's aide — were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.

State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.

"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.

Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.

"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.

After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims — some critically wounded — were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.

"Are the hospitals taking donations for the injured?"

I am not sure if the following info. applies in this situation.

Most Amish families have a "pay as you go" type healthcare arrangement with their local doctors or hospitals. The families pool their money together and pay. This may or may not apply in this instance. But knowing just a little background...I will ask friends who live in that area for more info....or defer to those on FR like Thumper who may know more detailed info.

I think the Amish will continue to believe that guns and violence are evil.

Amish believe that violence is evil, not gun. They own guns.

I am guessing extreme shock. These kids have never seen violence before. They don't have movies or video games as a source of reference. They probably have never seen this many non Amish before, let alone emergency vehicles.

I think they are just shocked out of their minds.

Where are these twisted screwballs getting the idea to go into a school and kill children? Al Qaida, the Taliban, terrorists.........I don't really care what kind of mental problems these creeps have after they kill innocent people. I am beyond angry. I can't say anymore, because I enjoy being able to post on FR.

Thanks. I didn't know that, but with the kids being critical and life flighted out of the area to bigger hospitals they might need some help.

"Amish believe that violence is evil, not gun. They own guns."

I've noted my misconception. Still, from my understanding they think guns are evil if used to kill people -- even in self-defense.

Amen, Thumper1960. The lives of the injured children are still hanging in the balance and, of those who survive, what will their condition be?

Oh Lord!

"Most Amish families have a "pay as you go" type healthcare arrangement"

I remember those days. It was great. You went to the doctor when you were sick. He made you better. You paid him. I can count on less than 2 hands the number of times I've been to a doctor in my lifetime, other than for a pregnancy. I'll be 55 this year.

How can one help with medical bills for the girls that were life flighted to bigger hospitals?

That's an excellent question. $11K for the ride sticks in my mind. Anyone?

Some of the locals feel that the Amish must be ripping them off since they are successful on land that others couldn't live off of.

This has happened in a big way in Paraquay where there are many successful Amish and Mennonite dairy farmers. The government is limiting their expansion and sales.

If you find out if they will accept donations to defray expenses and where to send it, please let me know via FR mail.

Or start a thread with that info as I am sure there are many here who would give.

Everything in an Amish community is owned by the church. Least that's the way it around here.

I dont think that is true.

The Amish pay for everything in cash up front...land, farm equipment, medical expenses. But you may be able to donate something to Penn State Hershey Medical Center or Lancaster General Hospital and have it earmarked for their medical expenses or (in the case of Hershey) lodging.

My husband had heart surgery 2 months ago at one of the hospitals where they are now caring for the victims. The waiting room was always full of Amish. When one of theirs is hospitalized, a large clan is there from sun-up to sundown, always in attendance. They bring the little tykes and coolers of food. They have their meals there and sit with a bit of sewing, patiently waiting all day long.

Outside the hospital it's not uncommon to see a buggy tied to a parking meter. In fact, when my father had surgery earlier this summer, I had to step around a pile of "road apples" in front of the main entrance.

Pray and send condolence cards.

They don't need more than that from the outside world (IMO).
