Update: Multiple Shooting Victims and Possible Hostages in Lancaster County

Not many details available yet, but an incident has been reported from Mine Rd. in Bart Township in Lancaster County involving multiple gunshot victims. Dennis Buterbaugh reports live from our newsroom. abc27 has a news crew on the way. We will update with details as they become available.

Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting

NICKEL MINES, Pa. — At least two female students and one slightly older female — who may have been a teacher's aide — were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.

State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.

"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.

Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.

"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.

After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims — some critically wounded — were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.

That's pretty hard to tell a child. To run towards the danger instead of away from it? I have thought the same thing. But would you want that first child that is shot in the rush to gang takle the assailant to be yours? I am more in favor of arming the teachers. Or posting armed guards at the schools.

I don't think so. There were still quite a few during that time as well. The real lull happened in Sept. 2003. No incidents for a year and a half.

Armed guards usually only end up being the first victims... the attacker always has the drop... you would need barbed wire and blast zones to keep children truly free from danger... one armed guard only really gives a false sense of security.

"It's really sad that teachers need to be armed nowadays. How come most of these horrible shootings are happening in schools; I believe almost all in public schools"

This was not a public school...and this was not a young student, so I don't see how your comments apply to this thread.
I don't know much about Amish theology, but I'm guessing these innocent kids and teachers were quite welcoming to the theory of creationism.

When you do come across angry young adults in the public school system, you gain quite alot of insight when you learn about their parents and home life.

but be wary of the unsociable

In all due respect, this was said during the Salem witch trials of eccentric old ladies who were then falsely accused of witchcraft. But I understand the point you are trying to make. How do we teach children to be cautious of their own safety, in the presence of people who may be outside of the mainstream of what society considers safe and acceptable behavior?

Have yall ever heard of something called the diary of dead milkmen? I was searching for what happened 20 years ago on Oct 2nd and I saw it. I didn't understand what it meant but it seemed really weird, after what happened today.

The impression seems to be that he had a grudge, and the Amish were nearby targets. It is not confirmed that his hostility was specifically toward them:

The gunman, Charles Carl Roberts IV, a 32-year-old truck driver from the nearby town of Bart, was bent on killing young girls as a way of "acting out in revenge for something that happened 20 years ago" when he was a boy, Miller said.

Miller refused to say what that long-ago hurt was.

Roberts was not Amish and appeared to have nothing against the Amish community, Miller said. Instead, Miller said, he apparently picked the school because it was close by, there were girls there, and it had little or no security.

I just spoke to someone at the information desk there (717-531-8080) She told me that, "the Amish don't participate in things like that and doubted that a fund would be set up"

Thank you, Graybeard58. That sounds true to form to me. I wonder why someone would come on this thread and pretend otherwise.

In spite of good intentions, we don't always have to "do something."

What on earth made this man descend into the pit of hell on Earth like he did today?

He was supposed to get a drug test the next day. It will interesting to see what his autopsy drug tests show.

Right. It's like I said. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. But that shouldn't stop us from thinking about possible ways to handle different situations. We were talking about a variety of different hostage situations, and weighing the possible choices in handling different situations. Please don't pull out one of those posts, and assign it a meaning that I didn't intend. For the record, it appears to me that this community, along with law enforcement, handled the situation the best way it could be handled. I can't think of anything that should have been done differently.

I give up. What are we checking his computer for? Pornography? Video games?

Could be. Suicide notes? Plans? The shooter wasn't Amish, by all accounts.

I agree with you that a bad homelife is the root problem with rage in people. I was just making the point that so many of similar type shootings are in the public school system and that is not suprising since alot of brainwwashing and anger happens there. Maybe this man had some problems with the school that he went to, so that and all of his other angers were focused on a school. Or perhaps that's not the case with this man and his darkside just picked a bunch of easy and innocent victims. I don't know, but since this was one of so many school shootings I think my point was valid. And I don't think they will ever stop unless the pressure and evolution-doubt teaching in public schools stops; or at least is balanced out with creationism theory. Don't you see that impressionable kids are looking for good examples from teachers that they may not have at home? And then they get some teachers who put forth a false theory that goes against their conscience? It's horrible and I believe underestimated in the damage it inflicts.

Hi phoenix0468-

"...[Wayne] LaPierre, IMO, is a kook if he is making any connection between these events and the fact that they may be tied to any legislation or upcoming election..."

Take a look at this Wayne LaPierre excerpt for a bit more insight on the topic. Do you honestly believe leftist gungrabbers would cease pursuing their statist dreams if shootings immediately stopped? It isn't about firearms, it's about control pure and simple. The despair and overwhelming grief borne from the tragedy of schoolhouse murders are their disgusting stock-in-trade. I'll eat my hat if we don't witness liberal legislators calling for more gun control before this month is finished.

Is everyone aware that a 4th girl has died? That leaves 7 girls in the hospital, most in critical condition. (per FOX)

If you think about it, the Amish are America's "religious extremists". They are in stark contrast to the "submit or die" religious fanatics we are fighting. How many of us feel threatened by the Amish? They practice their religion freely and live the way they feel is right, within the law, and are upstanding citizens in the process. I'm proud of our Amish and have this strong urge to protect them and help them right now.

What happened to them today is so evil. It just cuts to the quick and makes me so very sad for them. May God hold them all close to his heart during this time... :-(

Hi Miztiki-

Yes, the latest information I saw came from FOX as well. I watched the very sad news that a fourth girl had died of her injuries. Prayers have definitely been sent upward for the other kids to hopefully pull through.
