Update: Multiple Shooting Victims and Possible Hostages in Lancaster County

Not many details available yet, but an incident has been reported from Mine Rd. in Bart Township in Lancaster County involving multiple gunshot victims. Dennis Buterbaugh reports live from our newsroom. abc27 has a news crew on the way. We will update with details as they become available.

Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting

NICKEL MINES, Pa. — At least two female students and one slightly older female — who may have been a teacher's aide — were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.

State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.

"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.

Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.

"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.

After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims — some critically wounded — were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.

And how many of us actually carry firearms with us on a daily basis? Nobody I know unless it's hunting season.

Will you please save it for another day? Nothing short of at least two armed men in front of the school during the school day would have prevented this.

The children are dead because NO ONE BOTHERED TO DEFEND THEM FROM SOMEONE WHO INTENDED TO MURDER THEM!!! Wow. You could not have heard the PA State Police press conference, or even read the media accounts posted here and make a statement like that. You are on this thread for your agenda and your agenda alone. Not the time or place to make incindiary comments.

I think they said six deaths total now. I hope I heard that wrong.

At the time the woman called for help, it was a hostage situation and there was still hope that it could be resolved peaceably.

The police had the means and the equipment to make contact with the perp.

I believe they were acting in accordance to their faith. Hoping that someone could help resolve this without violence.

They don't care. They want to die. They are going to kill themselves so IMO, there is only one punishment we can offer to deter them and that is stopping them before they can accomplish their goals, and lock them up.

If I have a problem and call the police what is the difference? Just because they don't believe in fighting doesn't mean the police shouldn't be there for them too. And there are differences between the sects of the Amish. I think there are there are as many as eight different orders within the Amish population, with the majority affiliated with one of five religious orders - Old Order Amish, New Order Amish, Andy Weaver Amish, Beachy Amish, and Swartzentruber Amish. The churches operate independently from each other with differences in how they practice their religion and conduct their daily lives. The Old Order Amish are the largest group and the Swartzentruber Amish, an offshoot of the Old Order, are the most conservative. I go up to Lancaster quite a few times a year to buy antiques from them and have heard stories where they will defend themselves if someone breaks into their homes. One Amish man subdued the person who broke into his house, tied him up with horse reigns and had his son go to an English neighbor to call the police. They do hunt and therefore they have guns. I think they would wish the media to stop taking their pictures and just let them bury their dead and get on with mourning and their lives.

I would hope we could all curtail the 2nd Amendment debate on this thread and save it for another time. This is not the time or place for such. This wasn't a large public school. It was a one-room schoolhouse in the middle of the country. Nothing short of two armed men posted at the school every school day would have stopped this evil man - and that simply will not happen at every one-room Amish school (and there are thousands of them). We need to realize that guns cannot stop all evil - that sometimes, evil will destroy the most vulnerable to targets just because it can, and there is nothing we can do about it but mourn afterwards.

I understand and respect what you are saying. Nothing would please me more than curtailing the 2nd Amendment debate here. Unfortunately, these events never fail to bring out those who would forfeit everyone's God-given rights for a false promise of safety. Such rantings cannot go unchallenged.

As for "Nothing short of two armed men posted at the school every school day would have stopped this evil man", I disagree. One individual on the scene with the proper mindset, armed or not, reacting in proper fashion the second the incident begins, often stops such atrocities in short order.

Been there, done that.

Hi Marysecretary-

"...And how many of us actually carry firearms with us on a daily basis? Nobody I know unless it's hunting season..."

Many people carry defensive firearms. It has been estimated legally-owned sidearms are used over 2,000,000 times per year (with rarely a shot fired) by private citizens to prevent crime. Hopefully more and more states will wisely turn either "aqua" or, better yet, "green" in the map below:

This community had no reason to expect this to happen. I believe it is very unfair to criticize them, when they probably felt their kids were in one of the safest schools around. They don't need people beating them up with the what they could have done. It could have happened anywhere. We have had two other schools attacked this last week too. The second had an alert janitor and a principal that gave up his life to protect his kids. Would they both have been so alert if another school had not just been attacked? Unfortunately ,it seems we have to learn, after evilness committed because it's just beyond understanding to figure these killers out IMO. These good folk will work out their own security. It may not be our way but they will change some stuff.

That can wait for another thread, IMO. You will not change that person's mind, he is a very distinct minority on FR, and all it does is detract from the larger tragedy.

One individual on the scene with the proper mindset, armed or not, reacting in proper fashion the second the incident begins, often stops such atrocities in short order.

Not in this case. The perp was a local. He was not in a position where he would be suspected of wrongdoing until it went down. He could have easily taken out one unsupecting armed man.

Let's let this one go from a 2nd A viewpoint. He could have just as easily driven his milk truck through the school and killed even more people, not gun requied, no way to stop him.

We're in 100% agreement. It is not as if the non-gunowners are feeling grief while the gunowners are smug. It is safe to say any sane FReeper feels enormous sadness over this terrible crime. You are right that the outrageous posts attempting to eliminate Constitutionally-guaranteed freedoms cannot go unanswered.
