R.I.P. Christopher Hitchens

December 15, 2011 11:51 P.M. By Daniel Foster     Vanity Fair reports that Christopher Hitchens has passed away. Often frustrating, usually provocative, always brilliant. He added to the culture, and the conversation.

I’m sure I join many in hoping he is in for a glorious, glorious surprise.

And frankly I am rather disgusted at all the people fawning over him.

I'm with you on this one. He struck me as arrogant and mean. He had a way with words in the same way a really good thief would be in his craft. A unique talent but immoral.

“...what the hell are you saying....?

Believers go to Heaven. Nonbelievers go to Hell.

So, that makes me a prick?

Yes. You seem to be wishing the man to be in hell.

No thanks necessary. He was a brilliant human being; just because I did not agree with him on so many issues did I consider myself a better man, nor would I wish him to be judged more harshly than the rest of us. It's my hope that we may all pass the same muster, and see him, fit as a fiddle, one the other side, with stories to tell us that we can only imagine.

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

Your gloating that a nonbeliever goes to hell makes you a prick. A really *big* prick in fact.

Read 2 Peter 3:9, and then answer me this, Who is more joyous if Christopher Hitchens has gone to hell — you or God?

I am appalled at the hypocrisy on this thread. If Hitchens had been a liberal like Bill Maher, rather than making excuses and wishful thinking most people would be “Hope he likes Hell”.

Consistency is important in conservatism.

What do you mean? Hitchens was for the most part a liberal, way on the left on many issues. He was only with us on a few points at a few times and rejected the beliefs and values of most of us. So what? He didn't harm us, and he stood with us on some important things. He was a great talent, a brilliant man who clearly was wrestling with questions of his mortality and eternal state. So the right thing to do is to pray for mercy for him.

When Mahr dies I'll pray for him as well, even though privately I'll be glad I never have to hear him again. I actually pray for Mahr right now.

I heard him say in nearly every interview he gave over the last six months to not believe any reports of a deathbed conversion... he said that if he did say something like that while dying, it would be due to his inability to reason anymore.

"“Hitchens was an atheist. They don’t get into Heaven.”

Why not?

"My Bible doesn’t teach that people who believe themselves to be smarter or better than God are invited to spend eternity with Him."

We aren't talking about someone that thinks they are smarter than god. We are talking about someone that didn't believe in god. But the question remains. Why should god care so much whether you believe in him?

Neither do those who take a simplistic, comic book view of God. Believe it or not, being a white trash, literalist, non-reflective attender of a megachurch doesn’t get you into heaven either.

I know its easy to be simplistic and stupid, but its not getting you to paradise. Sorry.

Class always shows. As does lack of it.

Greeting the news of any death with smug imprecations is classless.

I found some of his writing interesting... And he died on my birthday so I’ll always remember that... Hope he found God first.

He was an honest and respectful debater and even though I disagreed with him, I did enjoy his style and his thoughtful arguments. I hope he made a death bed conversion. RIP.

Sorry, I pray for the living, not the dead. There are no second chances. I prayed for Hitchens for a long time, even just the other night when his name was brought up. But he made his bed and now he has to lie in it. I would have rejoiced if he had changed his mind but there is no evidence that he did or had any intention of doing so. As I posted upthread, there are actually very few deathbed conversions in my experience.

AFA, being a ‘liberal’ he attended at least one FR event (someone else posted about meeting him there), and other than religion, he was pretty much a 9/12er according to people esp when it came to Islam.
