Why would you care? The cup is once every 4 years. Just don’t watch. Same with the WNBA. It’s a joke. Accordingly I don’t watch it. Like it or not, millions of people play soccer in the US. I don’t. I don’t particularly like it. But I can understand why people make a big deal out of the World Cup.

I played rugby for 20 years. Love the rugby World Cup. Not too many people in the US care about rugby either. But I’m glad I get to watch those World Cup games every 4 years. Why anyone would bitch about it is beyond me.

The Michael Sam thing is just a good reply to the “soccer is ghay crowd”. I am sure there are homosexuals in every sport, Except for hockey, no homosexuals play that because:

1. Getting into fights with other players will quickly destroy ones boyish looks, we can’t have that.

2. Any gay that can skate is already doing figure skating.

No idea why some people choose to find the sport itself so threatening.

...the sport itself is not threatening, it’s the gender/equity crowd that’s attempting to make it the national sport...soccer is the perfect wet dream for these harpies, in that with a few rule tweaks (girls getting within twenty yards of the net counts as a goal, for instance,) girls and boys could play the game against each other without the boys clobbering them by some outlandish margin, as in all other games...

...it’s also the perfect game for the ‘let’s not keep score’ ninnies...nobody scores anyhow, no need to even change the rules...

...as far as the game itself goes, the purpose of it appears to be to approach a ball at the center of a field, proceed to kick it out of bounds as quickly as possible, retrieve it, throw it back into play and proceed to immediately kick it out of bounds again...but I’m sure I’m missing something...

Google doodles on soccer are as irritating as can be. How long is soccer season so I can avoid google for that amount of time at least.

Something about nappy headed rakes, or nappy headed shovels. Never quite understood it.

...one wonders what anybody would want with a nappy headed gardening implement...what with dirt clinging and all that...can’t imagine why he felt he had to apologize for it...

All my life, soccer has been touted as the next big thing in American sports. This goes back to the 1970s when Pele was evidently the best in the world at running up and down a large field with tube socks chasing a dimpled white ball.

"Just you wait" said the soccer aficionados at the time, "Soon soccer will be so big in the U.S.A. that you will forget all about NFL football and MLB baseball."

Indeed, "youth soccer" programs sprung up all across the United States in a concerted effort to make it happen. A whole new term was coined for harried housewives in mini-vans ("soccer moms") and at least three generations of 6-10 year old kids learned the joy of standing around in large fields, picking the underwear out of their butts, while several energetic kids who actually took this sport seriously ran circles around them. Nobody ever kept score. Everybody went for ice cream after practice. And everybody got a trophy.

If every adult American who ever played soccer as a child was to clean out their attic and simultaneously put their soccer trophies up for sale on Ebay, the entire Internet would come to a stop due to crashed servers.

Alas, all the would-be American "Peles" got bored with the game and moved on to other recreational activities by the time they reached puberty. Such as Nintendo, texting, YouTube, etc.

I can't explain why soccer never catches on in the U.S. but it's not like we never tried.

This is kind of a fun thread for soccer/football fans to bash each other, so I am not taking anything here seriously. But the idea that women can play soccer as well as men is just not true. The best female team in the world would lose to the worst men’s national team by 30 goals.

Its the same reason that females should not be doing front line combat, sure many can lift a gun and fire as fast and accurate as a man. But a woman simply cannot run around for dozens of miles the way a man can. They do not have the stamina. Soccer is a sport with 45 minutes at a time of more or less continuous running, a female team will never be able to compete against a male team doing that.

that 3rd world crap should be illegal!

Should it be made illegal at the worldwide level by the UN? Or would you prefer that a federal agency be created to serve as a watchdog, punishing those engaged in that illegal practice of playing soccer? And for those who watch the games, do you think a felony conviction is a suitable means to deal with the crisis created by soccer?

Are there other activities in the realm of sport (to use the Willard Mitt Romney) term that should be outlawed? Will basketball still be allowed since it was created in the United States, albeit in the leftwing state of Massachusetts?

I am glad that men can earn money playing professional soccer and that women can earn money playing pro hoops. Just don’t ask or expect me to watch it.

I’m not sure what you mean by “catch on”

MLS is averaging almost 20k fans per game (19 teams)

World Cup tv ratings are in line with the NHL playoffs and are up about 25% over the 2010.

(I’m not a soccer fan, just pointing out facts)

LOL!

Thanks for your epic post. All I can do is concur. I, too, remember the Pele hype and the breathless predictions that soccer would soon sweep America. Never happened.

I don't get the media's obsession with this sport. Yes, it is wildly popular outside of the US, but over the past 150 years we have developed our native sports and we like them better.

The NFL Europe thing didn't catch on. And neither will mass soccer hysteria in the US. They should just give it a rest.

Well, they are letting unassimilated 3rd world immigrants into this country at a rate that soccer will just default by demographics.

I enjoy watching NFL Football and have since about 1971, and I love hockey, but I have no use for baseball and basketball.

Soccer is, to me, like watching a peewee hockey game. Probably fun if you have a kid playing or you are coaching. But completely boring from a perspective of action, in my opinion.

If people enjoy it for the social aspect, going to a pub in a European country and getting immersed in it, that sounds fun.

But from a sports perspective, soccer is on the same level from a viewing perspective as women’s softball, baseball, and golf.

...ah yes...the dream vacation...sitting in a bar watching soccer on a 32 inch TV with a bunch of Hondurans...

Not a dream vacation by any means and certainly not on one's "bucket list" as you succintly put it.

Nevertheless, it was a unique experience that I cherish and was able to share with not only my family here but the Hondurans we vacationed with who are an extended family of mine........

It's unfortunate that you'te too ignorant to understand that concept.

I’m watching it right now, I know nothing about it but it seems way better than WNBA. I mean come on, WNBA is neck in neck with the jewelry shopping network or those celebrity wife swap swamp logger drek.

Ghana just tied it or whatever they call it in this sport.

One thing I am really digging is the lack of commercial breaks. One thing I am not digging is the ball going out of bounds or whatever it is called. Also the floppage.

The USA just added another goal. I don’t like all the celebration afterwards, but at least it doesn’t happen all the time over nothing like in the NFL.

Freegards
