“Setting the props for a third term?”

Could you make it more cryptic?

Thanks.

This opinion piece minimizes much and does not give full context of the chief’s statement. Since when did we decide that police have to be injured or killed before they are allowed to respond?

And some FReepers went nuts on those of us asking this same question when Ferguson first broke.

We are grow comfortable living in a police state, and lie to ourselves that it’s not really a police state we now live in.

This weekend there are myriad ‘safety checkpoints’ all over town. Every car is stopped, your papers are asked for, your car is visibly searched, if the cops suspect drinking you must submit to a blood test on the spot.

We became Soviet - and we lie to ourselves it’s not a Police State.

Cops shoot a shoplifter dead, and we say “they had it coming’.

We deserve everything about to happen to us.

I saw the video of that incident.

Cops pulled up and began shooting the man within seconds of getting out of their car.

Mace and a baton trump a knife if you have any kind of training whatsoever.

Shoot-to-kill cops will eventually be turned on you at some point in the near future.

This one does not look good for the cops.

Will wait for more info.

I saw it too. The police were giving instructions to the man which were ignored. He continued to advance on them all the while yelling shoot me now.

So glad that you are all knowing and can tell what will work. Mace does not have much effect on those who are high on certain drugs.

I am sure your years of experience give you omniscience the rest of us lack

At one time not long ago in our society - such a man advancing on cops was taken down without having to emptying a gun into him.

These kinds of things are no longer just epidemic, they are become ENDEMIC to what constitutes law enforcement.

And yet there’s so many apologists for the police state because they have never been at the receiving end of corrupt cops and militarized gear queers itching to unload on citizens.

If you have nothing to hide you got nothing to fear right?

Always obey an agent of the state’s commands or get shot, right?

Obviously if sentiments like yours are a majority - we do not deserve liberty in this country and deserve what we get.

John Quincy Adams, son of John Adams, was a fool???

My. How arrogant we have become in our ‘enlightened’ age with proofs and fruits abounding that what the Patriarchs warned us would happen when we abandoned our principles for expedience.

all the while yelling shoot me now.

I'd argue that's irrevalent. An irrational person might assume at the sight of guns pointed at him that he's going to be shot. An irrational person is not going to process 'following orders'. He's mentally on a ledge. I really wish I had a better audio isolation, but the 'shoot me now' initially comes across to me as a statement made in anger - as one would make to a firing squad in defiance - he wasn't begging to be shot - in his mental state I'd bet that's all the verbalization he could physically muster.

I've read too many stories about 'shoot me now' irrationals being accommodated. One size fits all policing is just not working anymore in a society where it seems 20 percent of the population is medicated, off their meds or in sore need of meds. And it's not fair to the officer on the street that the only tool he has to deal with irrationals is a gun.

So, I wonder how this situation could have been defused? Is there a less than lethal approach for the mentally ill? Do we need a crisis management approach, with law enforcement providing area containment only while a team talks the guy down? Is there a time limit? I'm just real bothered with the 90seconds and you're dead end result.

We spend hours talking a man off the edge of a bridge who's yelling I want to die, we can even get their loved ones on the phone, so why can't we do the same on the ground?

“Mace and a baton trump a knife if you have any kind of training whatsoever.”

How long have you been instructor in both of these disciplines?

Excuse me, BS.

The pistol has always been the appropriate response to a knife attack.

It’s been proved that a person with a knife can run at an Officer and attack him with a knife before he even can draw his weapon from its holster.
This was from 21 feet away.

So for a cop the question is do you live or die from a knife attack?

For me I’ll take take that into consideration.

“If you have nothing to hide you got nothing to fear right?”

I never said that and you are putting words into my mouth.

What I find interesting is that you site a time in our society when a man advancing on police would be taken down without firing a gun.....Really??? What I remember is time when thugs didn’t just randomly rob people and attack anyone who came there way. Perhaps it is the same time period because people didn’t attack the police....but when they did they got beat nearly to death. I guess that might be better.

It is a leftists dream to have the population not the trust the police because then chaos and anarchy are easy to foment. The left is doing all it can to stoke the flames.

I also never said one should ‘obey’ every order. Painting with a broad brush ruins your argument and makes it impossible to focus on what is.

“Obviously if sentiments like yours are a majority - we do not deserve liberty in this country and deserve what we get.” You don’t know what my sentiments are. You did set up straw arguments and then use this as proof that we are all lost. You learned well from the left and the likes of Alex Jones.

If you want to have a discussion based on what I actually said fine but do not put words into my mouth.

You are correct that his words were irrelevant.... I was merely stating what I saw and heard from the video that weren’t mentioned at all by the previous post.

I am open to the idea of having a better way to diffuse such a situation. Talking someone off a ledge is a bit different because they are contained and not coming at you with a weapon.

We do not do a very good job of handling those who are mentally ill. Once we quit hospitalizing and confining those who are a danger to themselves and others the society ends up with these types of situations. In his delusion this man could have (did not say would) injured someone else-—even perhaps killing them. Then we would be screaming about why the police didn’t do something.

I look at ‘the knockout game’ thugs who attack with no indication that they are coming at you and that worries me more. Those are not fair comparisons. I do not have a best solution for these situations. I am wondering if rubber bullets and stun guns are enough for most situations....better training.

If they're shouting conflicting commands, you'll get shot anyway.
