My Dad was there. I inherited a small bag of that black volcanic glass that passes for beach sand. He told me that each time they fired their howitzer, it jumped 2-3 feet. The sand is like little black BBs slightly out of round. They make good ball bearings, though.
I’ve heard the description that it was like trying to walk in wet coffee grounds.
