According to Jesse Jackson, even hurricanes are racist.

With all the tragedy surrounding the events of hurricane katrina, you would think that somebody like Jesse Jackson would put their nose to the grindstone and help out people in need. Not Jesse.

According to the Reverend Jackson, "It is racist to call American citizens refugees." According to the dictionary I use, the definition of a refugee is "an exile who flees for safety." Its bad enough that Jesse feels like politicizing a catastrophe, but he is not alone. Several memeber of the Congressional Black Caucus have also come out to say that refugee is not an appropriate term for black people who left their homes for safety.

In the world of Reverend Jackson racism is everywhere, including which words the media uses to describe people who left New Orleans and are living outside the state. Maybe Jesse should direct more of his brain power to helping people instead of reading the paper and watching TV to look for signs of racism.

Actually I don't think refugee is the right word either, but not for racial reasons.

According to the Reverend Jackson, "It is racist to call American citizens refugees."

I suggest we call them "residentially-challenged", then.

I guess Foreigner was being really racist when they sang about not wanting to live like a refugee.

Katrinka. I don't know about the k-less name as far as Russian. But "Katrina" has been around Europe for ages, I'm quite sure.

But we're too busy naming girls "Meredith" and "Bethany" now.

That was Tom Petty, IIRC.

We got somethin' we both know it
We don't talk too much about it
Yeah it ain't no real big secret all the same
Somehow we get around it
Listen it don't really matter to me baby
You believe what you want to believe
You see you don't have to live like a refugee

Somewhere, somehow somebody
Must have kicked you around some
Tell me why you wanna lay there
And revel in your abandon
Listen it don't make no difference to me baby
Everybody's had to fight to be free
You see you don't have to live like a refugee
Now baby you don't have to live like a refugee

Baby we ain't the first
I'm sure a lot of other lover's been burned
Right now this seems real to you
But it's one of those things
You gotta feel to be true

Somewhere, somehow somebody
Must have kicked you around some
Who knows, maybe you were kidnapped
Tied up, taken away and held for ransom
It don't really matter to me
Everybody's had to fight to be free
You see you don't have to live like a refugee
I said you don't have to live like a refugee

You need to brush up on your 70s/80s bands, that was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Whatever and who cares - exactly.

Why so much angst and hand-wringing over every freakin' word we say?

Several, in fact, everyone I know named Katrina is white, most of primarily Irish descent.
