For whites in Prince George’s, a mirror on race Maryland county’s black affluence

The swimming pool in Abby Hopper's Bowie development was already crowded when Hopper, her husband, their two toddler girls, her sister-in-law and her two young kids arrived in a cloud of plastic buckets, kickboards and Cinderella floaties. Just settling in was a huge production. Then, sitting in her lounger, Hopper finally looked around. There had to be 75 people at the pool.

They were the only whites.

Hopper, 35, felt that stab — call it acute self-consciousness. She didn't know the people around her, and they didn't know her. What if Madeline made a splashy mess or Ellie took another child's floatie — because that's what little kids do. What if the other moms thought her girls were some entitled-feeling white kids, with their entitled-feeling white mother looking on?

Her husband, Greg, also likes that they got a lot more house for the money.

That is really scary that in PG county you get more house than in Baltimore City.

Baltimore is number 7 in murders at about 300 for 600k pop. PG county has about 100 murders a year, incredibly high for a suburb.

I stayed with a friend for a few months in PG county and I don't know where they are getting that the county is affluent. The mall there (PG Plaza) is downright scary. Just a bunch of people hanging out in the common areas. Oddly enough, the stores were almost empty haha. Not what I would expect from an affluent area.

I guess living in the 'woods' in PA. I am secluded from this type of thing...

I cannot imagine living in America that we still have this going on....

We are all Americans, white, black, brown, yellow, green, purple, orange, blue....does it matter? What do you do if you meet a Black American in the aisle, turn and walk the other way? I have an idea, how about smiling and saying 'HI'...

Yes we have an immigration problem and we should take care of it...its not right for people being here illegally, but to my knowledge the last time I checked, Black America was also America...

I can't believe you people would let this continue...how sad for America....

PG county seems nice until you get out on one of the main highways like Branch Ave and have a young fellow flying by you in his car with 25" wheels at 80 to 100 mph every few minutes. It's then that you start to wonder why your there.

Not really. A lot of black america has not assimilated. A lot of black america is more different that "little havana" in miami.

there are blacks who are not much different than whites. there are also a lot of blacks that are so outside the mainstream that blacks living in africa or the carribean are closer to the US mainstream culture.

Bowie, University Heights, and Greenbelt are relatively affluent.

The area around PG plaza is not. And temple hills is downright scary.

Perfect white liberal guilt about their race ... they should fit into PG quite nicely.

you couldn't have said it better. I like the part about the kids saying "hey they are your grandparents". If that situation was switched there would be a riot. But, to the guilt ridden liberals it was "cute".

Bennett, who is black, said crime and poor public schools remain the largest impediment to attracting affluent residents of all races.

I don't know what motivated this article but it's trying to spin PG county as a "Great Place To Live!" but the subject of the sentence above describes the problem.

Compare the crime rate of Fairfax County with Prince Georges County.

Compare the schools of Fairface County with Prince Georges County.

I would pay extra to live in a county with low crime and good schools regardless of skin color.

That being said, I do have friends who live there and it is a beautiful county and they're proud to live there but they complain of the same thing... much crime and lousy schools.

"Compare the schools of Fairface County with Prince Georges County."

Fairface? Is that a way to say it's a much "whiter" county than PG, or just a Freudian slip? :)

PG County is, for the most part, a scary $hithole. There isnt a single public high school I would be brave enough to send my kids to, even if you paid me. The "black wealth" they are referring to is from government jobs, and the lower home prices have to be weighed against having to bus your kids to private school

Working in PG County myself, Ive had 3 times in the last 10 years where I came close to being assaulted at a gas station, while pumping gas. I suggest living in Anne Arundel or Carrol County and doing the commute. You'll sleep better at night.

the public schools in bowie regularly score among the best in maryland.

most of the others in PG are at the bottom of maryland (excluding Baltimore city).

My mom teaches in Prince George's county. She feels a real need to teach the kids who are really messed up. She's found the perfect place. She's said that Prince George's school system is much worse than New Orlean's when she taught there.

Doesn't happen much. Loyalty to tribe trumps loyalty to nation. Best you get is a stand-offish neutrality - blacks and whites go about their business but totally ignore each other. Both groups feel it's safer to isolate than integrate. And it isn't a class thing, because it happens all the way up the economic scale.
