Today, Nancy Pelosi finally spoke out the enhanced interrogation briefings she received from the CIA. Her claim is that she was briefed by Bush administration officials on the legal justification for using water boarding, but they never told her the technique was actually being used. The Nancy Pelosi version of "I tried it but I never inhaled."
"In that or any other briefing we were not, and I repeat, were not told that waterboarding or any of these other enhanced interrogation techniques were used. What they did tell us is that they had some legislative counsel opinions that they could be used,"
There are two possibilities:
* Pelosi could be telling the truth. In that case, she was told all about water boarding procedure, she got the legal opinions saying that water boarding could be used, and assumed all that legal research was just an exercise. If this is what happened she is not a very smart person.
* The other possibility was Pelosi is lying not only was she briefed on the procedure but she even went to Gitmo to see how the prisoners were being interrogated. At least according to both the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post:

In the immediate post-9/11 atmosphere, did you really think the intelligence community was only going to just "talk" about using enhanced interrogation techniques on captured high-level personnel? Nancy, are you really that stupid as to believe that? That the intel types went to all the trouble of researching the techniques, getting legal opinions that ok'd their use...and then what? Let these masterminds of terror sit there in their cells getting three squares a day on our dime?
Nancy, if you really are that stupid and dull-witted, then you have no business whatsoever being in a governing, leadership position. You should resign immediately. If you're not that dull-witted, then you are an obvious liar that holds the average citizen's intelligence in contempt. Again, you should resign immediately. Either way, Nancy, your response to this issue has tested you and found you completely lacking in integrity, honesty, and leadership. You don't belong in DC, leave.

I have been asked whether I and the Democratic leadership were apprised of use of the technique known as “waterboarding” of prisoners for interrogation and information purposes once they were captured on the battlefields of Iraq or Afghanistan. Categorically, I deny having been aware of this technique being used on enemy combatants.
First of all, they told us and demonstrated what waterboarding was.
But they didn't tell us they would actually use it.
Knowing what evil ghoulish miscreants and cowards work in our military and intelligence services, we figured they would use it, but they didn't tell us they were going to use it on people who were alive. Had we known they intended to subject actual people to such cruel treatment we would have spoken up at once. So you see, this proves we knew nothing of the CIAs' intentions. We could not have known, otherwise you would have seen our objections in writing.
Therefore, when we later found out they were using w-boarding on people, we had no idea these were living people. After all, we were told that these were unreliable techniques for interrogation, so in conference, we figured that these techniques were being used on corpses, worst case, because we couldn't imagine using these techniques wouldn't make someone talk. After all, these methods were horrible and truly evil. That's why we figured they wouldn't actually use the techniques, because anybody with a brain would talk if they were waterboarded. So, we figured they were using this horrible torture technique on corpses, you know, bodies that were already dead, so it's perfectly understandable that none of the subjects were able to talk. This is why we've said all along that the methods are and would be ineffective, because none of us could figure out how they could get corpses to talk. So you see, our position is entirely consistent.
Somewhat later, they told us that despite all our concerns, they were using these methods on real people, who were actually alive. Imagine our shock to hear this. This took us entirely by surprise because when the technique was first demonstrated to us in committee, several CPR practice dummies were used for demonstration. So it was clear to us that they would never do this to people, either alive or dead. We believed this technique would only be used as a demonstration to scare any enemy combatants. We still did not understand how they CIA was planning to get information from inanimate dummies who are only used to practice certain medical techniques. We just couldn't see it.
For all these reasons, despite having had the methods demonstrated to us, we only believed the military and the CIA would be using these methods on practice dummies as a means to scare captured prisoners. At no time were we informed that actual prisoners themselves would be subjected to such harsh and despicable treatment. And so, I reiterate my position that I was never told of the use of these techniques.
