I am just worried about why so many Americans felt the need to stock up.

You need to pay more attention.

MimirsWell is (or at least, claims to be) in India ... his view of the situation in these United States is likely not as clear as ours ... distance and MSM tend to cloud the picture.

In any case, it's all 0bama's fault. We have learned well the Lesson of 1994: Democrats hate armed citizens.

what nonsense. Who would outfit an army with semi-automatic rifles, pistols and shotguns?

To outfit an infantry unit, let alone an army, would take artillary, mortors, machine guns, APCs, automatic battle rifles, grenades, helicopter support, trucks and logistics, etc, etc, etc.

Sunset brings a saddened sniff
Replaced a Defective sling, only if
The Gun had clattered down a cliff

[Along with ALL the ammo, but couldn’t get that to rhyme, sorry]

Heh. Love the title.

My first thought is that China and India must have very small militaries. That, or they don't train very much.

It is not unusual for true collectors to have 50 to 200 firearms or even more in a collection. Many of the military firearm collectors/shooters may go through up to 500 rounds or even more in one trip to the range...

Competitive shooters may use twice that amount of ammo a week. They too will have dozens of firearms.

The actual number of new guns, as distinct from ammo, was 1.2 million. To put it into perspective, about 40% of US households have guns, so this is a minor increase. And the amount of ammo purchased, as others have noted, is about one or two small boxes per gun-owning household. It’s just that when EVERYBODY decides to buy one or two extra boxes on the same month, the supply can’t keep up.

Speaking as a genuine Merchant of Death, I can say that most of these guns did not go to people who already had a safe full of them. They’re going to everybody. Collectors are buying up whatever odd piece they haven’t already got. Newbies are suddenly realizing that the economy is going to hell, and the occupant of the White House will most likely make it worse. I guess I’m not the only one who thinks the New Deal was a scam.

Hunters and people who had an old revolver are sticking their fingers in the wind and thinking, “I better buy one of these now, while I still can.”

There are also the standard customers who buy AR-15 rifles: people who want one, and wait until they can afford it.

I have yet to encounter a buyer who said he wanted an AK-47 so that he could kill police officers. I must be in a different gun store than the one frequented by Jimmy Carter.

"It would also mean an average of 4-5 guns per adult. That’s a dangerously high number - doesn’t signify a business as usual environment."

Four to five guns is not at all unusual or unreasonable. One usually has a .22 caliber rifle and handgun for "plinking" (cheap target shooting), a higher caliber handgun for self-defense, a higher caliber rifle for hunting (and other purposes), and a shotgun.

There's no such thing as "a dangerously high number". There are only dangerous owners, for whom even ONE would be too much---which is why felons lose their gun rights.

"I am against gun control so don’t get started on me. I am just worried about why so many Americans felt the need to stock up."

Because they don't trust Obama and the Democrat majority, and they are expressing that opinion in one of the legal ways of doing so.

Went to a local range last weekend – saw a lot of AR’s – I Take that as a sign of hope [Sorry to use THAT word]

If you can’t afford a complete AR, at least try to pick up a lower receiver – if you can find one that is.

Joe Biden wrote the Clinton assault weapons ban. Obama sponsored a law to impose a 500% tax on ammunition. Obama also sponsored a law banning carry permits on the federal level. Hillary Clinton, the Secretary of State, was supposedly “co-president” when her husband signed the assault weapon ban. Eric Holder, the Attorney General, was the man in charge of enforcing that ban at the Justice Department.

Then there are the “friends” of the current president. When the leader of the nation proudly associates himself with the likes of Jeremiah Wright, Tony Rezko, and William Ayers, we are in deep trouble.
