Barack Hussein Obama is president of the United States of America.
As such, he is due the respect that the highest office of the land commands. For reasons that every black person knows and many white people are learning, this president is receiving 400 percent more death threats than then-President George W. Bush, according to the Secret Service.
It's not all about Obama's desire to bring equity and compassion into the health care reform debate, although some people couch it that way. President Harry Truman tried to get health care reform several times, but he failed. President Lyndon Johnson signed a socialist program called Medicare into law. Neither drew as much ire as Obama.

Reacting to the riots and looting by expressing a longing for law and order was met with contemptuous sarcasm, i.e., law'n order -- and of course, screams of RACIST!

Death threats are issued by irrational people.
Merlene’s column is (we assumed) directed at the rational. The irrational won’t read it or care.
So what exactly is her motivation?

He is only due a level of Courtesy (as in Customs and Courtesies due the holder of the office of the President).
He, like every President before him, must EARN the Respect of the American public.
The polls now being provided almost daily seem to indicate that he “can't get no respect” -— even if Aretha spells it out for him one letter at a time (you being such a seasoned senior citizen, should remember Aretha, right Marlene?).

The Pres is not the commander in chief of the American people, much less of American children. He is the commander-in-chief of the American military. Only.
I owe, and give, him the respect his office deserves. I have little respect for most of the positions he promotes.
That said, I think the uproar over this speech is overblown. He is not going to brainwash all American children in a 20 minute speech.
If he says something that is inappropriate, give him hell for doing so, don't freak out before he says a word.
