Sounding Presidential? Newt Gingrich Knocks Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin
MEDIAite ^ | October 27th, 2009 | Steve Krakauer

We’ve written about the hotly contested Congressional race in New York’s 23rd district, in which many high-profile Republicans are endorsing the third party candidate over the Republican choice.

The most high-profile Republican endorsing the GOP choice, Dede Scozzafava, is Newt Gingrich, and he defended his decision On the Record with Greta Van Susteren last night.

Here’s how Van Susteren introduced the issue on Fox News last night: “You’re getting heat from Glenn Beck and others because you have endorsed the Republican candidate,” she said, before moving away from colleagues and citing Sarah Palin, Gov. Tim Pawlenty and other political figures. Said Gingrich:

I just find it fascinating that my many friends who claim to be against Washington having too much power, they claim to be in favor of the 10th amendment giving states back their rights, they claim to favor local control and local authority, now they suddenly get local control and local authority in Upstate New York, and they don’t like the outcome.

Beck didn’t just give Gingrich some “heat,” he had the third party candidate, Doug Hoffman, on his show just a few hours before Gingrich’s appearance. “They can vote for principles or they can vote for party,” said Beck as he described the race.

With Gingrich hinting he might run for President in 2012 (Michelle Malkin says “no thanks” because of Scozzafava), these shots at potential political rivals take on extra meaning: “I say to my many conservative friends who suddenly decided that whether they’re from Minnesota or Alaska or Texas, they know more than the Upstate New York Republicans – I don’t think so.”

And here’s a good shot that has a couple meanings. When Van Susteren asks about Scozzafava’s socially liberal beliefs, Gingrich says they are “about where Rudy Giuliani was when he became Mayor.”

We probably won’t see Gingrich on Beck’s show any time soon, but if he begins getting asked about the race in prime time again, but on Bill O’Reilly’s or Sean Hannity’s show, it could make for an interesting discussion with a traditionally agreeable guest.

Here’s the NY-23 part of the interview:

Newt has never got over his humiliation by Clinton in 1995.

I’ve liked Newt for many years, and consider him to be one of the most intellegent politicians of the modern era. However, this time he has gone too far. His attack on Sarah Palin is beyond the pale. IMO, the only reason that makes any sense is that he fancies himself as Presidential material, and plans a run in 2012. I have news for him...he won’t even make it through the primaries. Sorry Newt, you’re history.

His endorsement of Dede Scozzafava was Newt's Waterloo.

Newt is a has-been. His time is over. There was a time when he had my ear, but given his failure to understand the science of global warming enough to realize that global warming is a hoax or urban legend, given his sorry personal life, he is a has been for sure.

I agree. If he should ever surrender his ambition to principles, he’d make a good conservative.

Someone needs to remind the "historian" Gingrich that political parties are not mentioned in the U.S. Constitution. But a whole hell of a lot of principles were.

Do you mean the rear door of AF1 or when Newt caved on the government shutdown?

The government shutdown cave showed me what he was all about.

Question to the Newt-ster (who until recently was worth paying attention to): how the hell does a talk show host and former Alaska governor EXPRESSING THEIR INFORMED OPINIONS about a race that's not in their backyards translate to a usurpation of 10th Amendment rights? Newt's comment is as ridiculous as the 'chickenhawk' argument that the Left uses against any non-military person who disagrees with their appeasement policies.

Unless you get behind solid CONSERVATIVE candidates, then please either shut your pie hole or sit back down on that bench with Queen Pelosi and become a 'Rat.

Just my HO ...

This is the same Newt who was Speaker of the House. The 3rd most important job in the Congress. He had it all going, and just could not keep his zipper up. So he betrayed the Republican Party, the House of Representatives, the American People, and now he wants us to forget and forgive. No thanks Newt, you had your chance. I was a supporter even in his back bench days of bomb throwing. He alone was responsible for the removal of Jim Wright as speaker, he just cannot be trusted. Maybe if we had him neutered he might be O.K.

Both. The rest of the party began to realize this also, which is one reason why Newt was shown the door.

He has pretty much been neutered the same way that Teddy was. But it was always evident that he had some of the same failings as Bill Clinton.
