Reasons Not to Shower

Bethany Stotts, December 10, 2009

One Edinburgh University climate scientist argues in a December New Scientist article that common activities such as washing clothes, using toilet paper and drinking coffee are among the “five eco-crimes we commit every day.”

“I have long argued that climate change begins at home,” writes Dr. David Reay, senior lecturer on Global Change at Edinburgh. “Each of us in the developed world has played our part in creating this problem and, while there is no doubt that coordinated global action is needed to tackle it, we can each be part of the solution.” Reay is the author of Your Planet Needs You! A Kid’s Guide to Going Green.

His list of five everyday eco-crimes are:

1. Coffee. Apparently six-cups-a-day off this wake-up beverage can clock “up more than 175 kilograms of CO2 each year. That’s the equivalent of a flight across Europe—from London to Rome, say.”

“Add milk, and the methane belched by dairy cows means you increase your coffee’s climate-changing emissions by more than a third.”...

Didn’t they hear the latest? Climate Change is caused by the sun. It’s not manmade.

“4. Laundry. “Cleanliness has become a touchstone of domestic life since advertisers convinced us that our shirts must always be ‘whiter than white’, our sheets should forever smell of spring flowers, and that to be dressed in freshly laundered clothes at all times is a badge of success.””

Well no wonder they are battling MRSA in Britain!!!

Holy Cow. I am NOT going to shower less (unless it is like it was a few years ago when we were suffering through a horrific drought and we live on a well) and risk not only GERMS AND DISEASE, but PARASITES!!

Hippies didn’t do the washing thing either and they battled the MANGE. Yes, scabies was rampant in communes from not bathing AND WASHING CLOTHES AND SHEETS.

Disgusting.

“The real news here—and the blunt truth, barring a worldwide shift to nuclear power or some other massive breakthrough—is that carbon emissions cuts in line with those demanded by climate activists mean we’ll all have to become very dirty and smelly,” concludes Page. “And that’s just for starters.”

Translation: change everything humans do, and climate will still do whatever it darn well wants to.

Response: climate changes; cope.

Sheryl Crow was her name. And maybe her lack of cleanliness is what led Lance Armstrong to dump her. I mean how good must she have smelled if she only used one sheet of paper? Good grief. I will use as much as I need to get the job done.

The twits don’t realize there are REASONS - not just whims - why people drink coffee, use new-fiber TP, churn thru clothing, do lots of laundry, and have so much food some gets wasted.

Alternatives to their complaints:
- drink only unpurified water (classic disease vector)
- scratch your *** off (I predict the author never used TP in Germany) or scrub it with ... more water
- wear out clothing with all the attendant problems
- wear dirty clothing (another disease vector)
- be under-fed.

Funny, the author doesn’t live up to her own list. Bio pic alone indicates she’s well-fed, well-watered, fashionably attired, clean in both body & clothes, and peppy enough to have just enjoyed a cup o’ joe.

If liberals and their core constituency would do the right thing and just physically cease to exist, we’d solve all these issues. The climate would not change either way, but there’d sure be a hell of a lot less CO2 being emitted in the form of relentless whining.

That’s just it. Like cigarettes before, if they can’t convince you to change to their way of thinking, they will force you by raising the price to a point where you have no choice.

The core belief of the Greenies:

Humanity is a virus infecting the Earth Mother Goddess Gaia.

Thus, the Greenies should take the leadership role and give honest testimony and witness to their faith by eating guns. (yes, I know they also think guns are icky, but it would be so much faster - they would just get it over with).

But, but, but.... she’s special, one of the elite to guide us, so she should not be held to such standards. Same with Saint Albore.

Great post. You are so right, you cannot argue policy with people who have obsessive compulsive ruminations over bovine gas.

Defeat them, yes and amen!

“but there’d sure be a hell of a lot less CO2 being emitted in the form of relentless whining”

Manmade CO2 provides about 0.117% of the greenhouse effect, so I beg to differ on the “hell of a lot” part. (Although I would still enjoy the peace and quiet.)

These vile demoniacs are cowards. If everyone who believes humans are destroying the planet had the courage of their ocnvictions they would murder themselves and save the rest of us from their putridity.

hell of a lot less in the form of relentless whining. As a percentage of THAT whole anyway, it would be significant. And if even one of them took it to heart, that's progress.
