Be kind to illegal aliens

Every once in a while I get an "aha" moment and I can't turn my mind off, thus preventing me from a good night's sleep. A recent such "aha" moment came as I was reflecting on the issue of comprehensive immigration reform. Faith leaders who advocate a compassionate approach to illegal immigrants often appeal to the numerous "be kind to strangers" texts in the Hebrew Scriptures. That elicits the response, "Yes, but those were legal immigrants. I'm talking about illegal immigrants. Since illegal immigrants are lawbreakers, they shouldn't have any rights." Some further conclude that any person who thinks illegals should have rights is just another godless liberal seeking to undermine the moral fabric of America.

It occurred to me the other night that one of the most famous and beloved women in the entire Bible was an illegal immigrant...

You can be kind to snakes too, but beware - you know they are a snake, and snakes do what snakes do.

Just ask the family of the rancher, whose ranch is on the border, and who was murdered this past week.

OK, I’ll *kindly* ask them to leave.

IMO, they have been afforded a welcome mat for far too long.

The benefits of their being here is far outweighed by the cost of keeping them here.

If our esteemed correspondent Mr. Taylor were to come home from work and find an “undocumented house guest” had set up camp in his spare bedroom in his absence, would his response be “Welcome to my home, beloved illegal traveler”, or would he say “Get the heck out before I call the cops”?

Fine—we can kindly give them a snack as we kindly give them a free ride back to the border before kindly pushing their illegal backsides across the border.

No hard feelings, of course, and we will kindly give them our best wishes as they return to their own country.

Well, hold on. Everyone has rights. The founding fathers agreed on this: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." What we're talking about, really, is privileges given to US citizens and permanent residents. Let's be really careful about that definition, because you don't want to start going down the road where you question whether a given person has human rights or not. It's quite obvious from most any founding document that the founding fathers did, in fact, mean for all unbound men to enjoy equality. The tragedy was of course the slavery compromise, but that can only be described as a necessary evil; it was definitely not demonstrative of intent.

The Torah's commandment regarding kindness to strangers referred to the ger or sojourner - one who was willing to abide by the "one law for the native born and for the 'stranger' who dwells among you" standard. It was not applicable to foreigners who chose to remain aloof. Before Ruth entered Israel with Naomi she famously declared "your people are mine, you God is mine". She adopted her new culture and turned her back on Moab. I doubt that very many of our current "illegals" are emulating the attitude of Ruth, the Israelite.

Rather, most of our illegals have the attitude of Amalekites, Edomites and Ismaelites. They want to displace the extant culture with their own.

The illegal immigrants who are here are a big problem, but the ones who are still coming are the ones we should stop.
When the economy is down, many will go back home. Then if they could not come back we could work with the problem.

Ruth was married to a Jew and followed his mother home to Israel after he died. She was not in any way an “illegal immigrant.”

As usual, when supporting something they know is wrong using selective scriptures from the Bible, people refuse to mention those scripture that directly oppose their thought process.

While the scriptures he quotes are true, both our Lord and his apostles stated that as Christians, we are to obey the laws of the land we live in.

And respecting this comment of his:

Let's not forget that it was hardship that led Ruth to migrate with her mother in law Naomi. The same story could be told millions of times over today. If God commended people for breaking His laws because of compassion for their fellow human beings, what might He think of people today who challenge man-made laws for reasons of human compassion? Think about it.

Why doesn't he press those who are here illegally, to pick up the responsibility of changing the situation in the country they live in?

They did not live under a despotic regime, they lived under a corrupt regime. As a group, if they were determined enough, they have enough numbers to change the system.

Instead, they came here and illegally and immorally take advantage of a system that takes from the Producers to fund their lives.

With that statement (and her marriage to a Jewish husband) she was no longer an Ammonite or Moabite but a Jew.

If illegals did the same, they'd find a much better reception on this forum.
