Mention the word Iran to most people and this image is probably close to what first comes to mind:
Older people will remember a vastly different impression of Iran though, the Iran from before the Islamic Revolution. There are a large number of pictures and videos out there that show a radically different country from the one today

One person is solely responsible !!
Something Jimma is probably very proud of.
I regret not paying attention when I was old enought to know and care and healthy enough to remember.
So much either never got in, or has the feet of a buck in the crosshairs.
the old days ping
I can remember going through technical schools in the USAF with members of the Iranian AF. The US trained many of the Iranian troops in specialties. Things sure have changed for the better with Jimmy Carter.
I personally know several people who lived in Iran prior to the revolution, one of whom is a specialty surgeon. Iran was a highly advanced and prosperous country. The revolution completely killed off what once was a growing and prosperous country with a huge GDP.
The only time you ever see a happy muslim is when they celebrate the death of Americans.
Thank you Jimmy Carter. The gift that keeps on giving ! What a shame a once good ally is now a sworn enemy to us.
I remember going vacationing in Isfahan and Shiraz and eating Baluga caviar out of a tin can with a teaspoon. Iranian vodka was excellent and plentiful.
Islam can screw up a steel ball.
I guess this is what they mean by “Progressive”
I had a lot of interactions with Iranians before the revolution, both in college and in the military.
Almost without fail, I liked them immensely. I thought most had a very good sense of humor, they were intelligent and seemed more interested in doing what needed doing from a work and social perspective than they were interested in being “Persian” or “Iranian”.
What happened over there should have never happened with our help. We stabbed a lot of good people in the back. That SOB Carter is a stain on our nation.
One can find similar pictures from Afghanistan, Egypt and other muslim countries.
Islam is resurging after its huge loss of prestige during the colonial era when the west brought civilization to much of the world.
Me too. I know a few Iranian families and two of the men are very successful physicians. They all started to realize in late 1978 that things were getting bad and started getting their money and most valuable possessions out of Iran.
When you talk to them today they refer to themselves as Persians, not Iranians and nothing is more insulting to them than being called Arabs.
That was the scenario for a lot of the upper class in Iran in about 1978, and yes, they are very keen to point out that they are not Arabic.
England gave us the Beatles and Twiggy and we gave the worl sexual freedom in all manner of form(s)
This is very true, although I wouldn't lay the whole blame on Carter. The blame goes to liberals.
Liberals drew out the war and our eventual defeat in Vietnam in 1975. The Iranian revolution took place in 1979 soon after Vietnam. Liberals were in control of government and they detest any intervention by the US because in their view the US is an imperial conquering army, not liberators.
We saw the exact same thing happen in Iraq and Afghanistan where liberals almost forced our defeat until the surge. Recall Harry "the war is lost" Reid.
In summary, Carter yes, but liberals more so.
I’m going to play devil’s advocate here.
I had several friends in Junior College from Tehran in 1975-76 that I got to know. They at all immigrated here to get away from the Shah’s secret service. There was pretty severe oppression under his rule to certain ethnic groups. All of my friends were Christian Armenians. They had a uniformity poor opinion of their home country’s ruler.
There had to be a problem for the revolution to occur beyond just Islamic fervor.
I agree 100%.
Carter merely provided the leadership to do what they wanted done.
At the AMARG (boneyard) in Tucson, there sits a helicopter (can't remember the type) that was set to be delivered to Iran prior to the uprising.
It was there in the early 1990s when I gave tours there. Probably still is. Never delivered, never used.
